Flickering monitor

The top quarter of my monitor has been flickering once in a while when I have the cursor near the top of the screen. This is a new system that I built on 11 January and reinstalled Windows on 18 January. The flickering has been going on 5 days or so. It’s happened whether I’m on Edge, Brave, or Firefox.

  1. Can you upload an example of this behavior?
  2. What is the make and model of your monitor?
  3. What is the make/model of the GPU connected to the monitor?
  4. Have you tried multiple cables?
  5. Have you tried multiple monitor input types? (DP/HDMI/etc)

To resolve the issue, try the following steps:

  1. Make sure your graphics drivers are up to date.
  2. This will help determine if the flickering is specific to your monitor.
  3. Turn it off in your browser settings to see if that helps.
  4. Verify that the refresh rate and resolution are properly configured.
  5. Boot into Safe Mode to see if the flickering persists.
  6. Keep an eye on your GPU and CPU temperatures to ensure they aren’t overheating.
  7. Use Task Manager to close any unnecessary programs that may be affecting performance.
  8. Make sure your motherboard’s BIOS is up to date.

Thanks. I’ll try those suggestions.

Whe you write “ Turn it off in your browser settings to see if that helps”, what is “it” that you’re referring to?

By “it,” I’m referring to hardware acceleration. In your browser settings, you can turn off hardware acceleration to see if it helps resolve the flickering issue. Hardware acceleration uses your GPU to handle certain tasks, and turning it off can sometimes fix display problems.

I attached a screenshot of what I believe you’re talking about. I found it the system Settings rather than a web browser’s settings.

No, that is something different, your browser should have a similar setting (although go ahead and try that one anyway).

Are you using variable refresh rate? Fairly notorious for causing flickering, does for me. IIRC (I didn’t keep it enabled longer than about 5 minutes) browsers was one of the instances that caused it, although only on part of the screen would be weird.

And then of course there’s the possibility that your monitor is just dying, unless you’ve already ruled that out by trying a different one. Is it ONLY in the browser where this happens?

It’s a brand new system. I decided to build my own computer for the first time so all of the components are new. I listed the components in my profile. Someone mentioned that it could be a setting in the graphics card. But because of some things I didn’t know I needed to do the first time I’m going to reinstall Windows. No biggie. This is my first build so I knew there were going to be mistakes.
