I have recently decided to switch from console to PC as my main gaming platform, this is a first time build and would like any suggestions people have to make this an easier transition. I've been doing alot of my own research but you can only get so far with so little experience and I would love to hear from enthusiasts. I wanted to be as future-proofed as possible while staying in and around $1500 (USD). (As a side note, yes I went over but it was for my fancy extra peripherals I decided to snag, not a HUGE overstep.) Here's the PCPartPicker list: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/bNpHTW
Exra Info (from posting guidelines):
Gaming PC
Would like to learn to overclock
Might add a custom watercooling loop in the future
As for my OS, I would like to transfer it from my current PC if viable
Game settings would like to ATLEAST be 1080p 60 FPS on most games with high settings (but I don't quite know requirements for all games, so may be farfetched?)
Give me a moment to improve your build but in a quick glance I can already tell you that it's a bit unbalanced with some money in the wrong spots.
Something in the direction of http://pcpartpicker.com/p/HNz6bv is what I would recommend however it does require extra money. I wouldn't go 4690k anymore, Xeon 1231 v3 (No OC'ing though) and I7-4790k is where it's at currently. The 16GB of RAM is unnecessary and you can always upgrade to 16GB later for $50.
If this build is too expensive for you then here is what you can do:
- Don't get as fancy/expensive peripherals or just get a cheap CM Storm devastator combo now and upgrade later
- Replace the 4790k with a Xeon E3 1231 V3 and drop the Kraken X61 for something like a hyper 212 evo for silence. This means no overclocking though except for up to Turbo +0.4GHz (Multiplayers can often be increased up to 4 above the turbo multiplier)
- Replace the 980 with a 970 or R9 290(x) but this affects gaming performance by a lot.
What I would do personally is ditch the extra fans, fancy peripherals and desktop speakers for now and get a cheap CM storm devastator combo (Do not let the price fool you,it's an amazing combo of good quality). Then with this saved money opt for either a 980Ti or Fury X (Not even these 2 cards to everything maxed at 1080p 60fps though it's super close) where my preference would be the 980Ti as it is significantly faster with more VRAM.
Of course this is something YOU have to decide ultimately but I recommend having performance come first and THEN look into better peripherals, an SSD or similar (I got my 4790k and GTX 970 before I got my mechanical keyboard for example)
You've picked some good components to start out though I have a few suggestions for you. First off the 290, while a good card that will probably get what you are looking for, isn't exactly a future proofed card. With that budget you can get a definitely better card. Unless you are going to be doing other productivity applications, 8 gb of ram is good enough for gaming. With your cpu cooler, its a great cooler but it u want to save money, the hyper 212 evo is a great cooler. I use it in my first system and used it to overclock for the first time, managing to get the i5 4690k to 4.2 ghz at a decent temperature for my first go around. Solid choices in storage and motherboard. I don't really think u need a platnium good supply and you could save some money by going with a gold unless you really want efficiency. Also do u have a good gaming monitor?
This is the updated build with my recommendations http://pcpartpicker.com/p/LKqRxr
The graphics card is completely up to you and where your willing to free up money for a better graphics card. I personally have a 980 that I got on ebay for around $400 that works like a dream but if you want new, a 390 or 390x is probably your best bet
Congratulations Kill Your Console
How good is the monitor you are currently using?
Rather than blowing your budget on a pretty build (and btw, I do like your choices) you should really focus on maximizing your gaming experience.
Good choice in parts, it will definitely run most games on high @1080p 60FPS. By most I mean everything that isn't Ubisoft (Recent Games), Batman Arkham Knight, or any other currently horribly broken game.
New and improved list based on suggestions given, there were some things I was stubborn about but I realized that some of the things I had were a bit excess for my budget, ended up with this: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/V77sQ7
I might end up dropping the AOI for the 212 evo and just watch for some super awesome deal on a better graphics card, then upgrade to the h100i in the future. For those who asked, this is my monitor. http://www.microcenter.com/product/408370/e2252swdn_22_1080p_led_monitor
Thanks for all the help and any advice that I might continue to get, it's nice to have a helpful community.
