First PC Build

Hello all. This is my first post as well as my first build. Just wanted to get some opinions on my upcoming build. Starting to get my parts in now other than having to wait on the Gigabyte GTX 970 restock.

Heres my PCPartPicker List.

And a few notable items

i7-4790K CPU

Asus Z97 Pro Mobo [Wi-Fi]

16GB [2x8 GB] Corsair Vengeance RAM

Gigabyte GTX 970 GPU

Fractal Design Define R4

What are you going to be doing with this build?

Gaming and video editing.

It looks pretty good.  Here are some suggestions:

You don't need MX4 paste.  The stuff that comes with Noctua coolers works perfectly fine.

Grab the NH-D14.  You get a lot of cooling capacity for only $5 more.

Cheaper RAM: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/gskill-memory-f32133c11d16gxl

Change the power supply to 750w if you want to save some money..  GTX 970s are not power hungry, and a 750w will allow you to have two GTX 970s and plenty of overclocking headroom.

$80 for a non-mechanical keyboard?  That's a bit steep imo.  Look into something with Cherry MX or Khail switches at that price bracket.

Everything you named actually arrived about 3 hours ago.

^^^ everything he said

Errr, with all that cash going into this build and for video editing you should think about getting a larger SSD. 120GB is ok, but it will fill up quick with all the "essential" programs. The extra space is great for using during video editing as well. An 850 Pro is a great choice, but the 840 Evo in a 256GB version would be just fine as well.

The cheaper RAM would be good, but the faster clocked RAM can actually be beneficial during video editing. Its whether or not the OP thinks it would be money well spent depending on how much editing he actually does. With how much editing I do on my rig, I wish I would've opted for faster 16GB instead of the 8GB of 1600Mhz that I have. It works, but I do actually use my rig for quite a bit of editing.

I actually do editing for YouTube videos and for others as well so indeed the faster RAM will be beneficial.

I was only using the SSD for the OS and nothing else. I didn't have much budget left and didn't wanna wait for a larger SSD. I'll definitely invest in one later on though.

Your list edited > http://pcpartpicker.com/user/deejeta/saved/dpqrxr. >> better suited xeon cpu, larger ssd and hdd, larger ips monitor (a 21.5 inch that was originally there is waaaay to small), better suited psu.

Im not a fan of the k50 raptor, try one in person before you settle on it. Feels cheap and its like typing on a sponge.

I'm not very well versed when it comes to what's what but not sure what the benefit would be with swapping out the 4790K for the Xeon. As for the storage its just gonna be SSD for OS and HDD for everything else. As for the monitor. Though it would be nice to have, the monitor I chose comes with built in speakers and 2 HDMI hookups for one of my consoles. Plus my TV will be close enough to just plug it in if I want to. And I plan on possibly getting another 970 in SLI [next year possibly] so not sure the PSU would cut it. And the Mobo you chose has a memory cap speed of 1600. As Greendouglash put it. The faster RAM helps with video editing.

With the Xeon, you lose the integrated graphics and overclockability/unlocked multiplier when compared to the i7-4790k.  Otherwise, it's the same chip.

You need a Z97 board that's SLI-certified if you want to run 970s in SLI.

Memory speeds and timings make next to no difference at all. you'd only ever see evidence of an increase with synthetic memory benchmarks. Chose that memory for the price not the speed, can be run at whatever speed you like.

Remember there is ram frequency and timings.

Here watch Linus' vid about memory.

& here for how much of a difference 2933ddr3 is over 1600

Built-in speakers are never good.

A single 970 at the present is overkill for 1080p, even for probably the next 12 months at least as well. You could comfortably run sli'd 970s with that xfx (seasonic) psu. They use bugger all power even in sli. <link>

my 2c

RAM and PSU already arrived. Had a promo code and a mail in rebate for the PSU so not feeling too bad about the price. Built-in speakers are better no speakers.

Come on guys... This is only a little more and will offer the most expandability:

You want DDR4 and that hyperthreaded beast.

Then why didn't you get a 60 GB SSD? Cheaper and more than enough room for the OS.

with the type of build you are doing i think money is not that big of an issue so ddr4 would be nice and a raid config maybe? and a good cpu custom cooler (liquid cooled maybe)

You're insane, to switch from DDR3 to DDR4 he would have to change his MOBO, CPU, and RAM. You can't just drop a DDR4 kit into a DDR3 board. To get the same performance with a 2011-v3 socket board, cpu, and ram you're looking at spending a minimum of $1800 just for those three components. You can get a much better system for the money right now with the way he's going.

If I were you I would opt for a second monitor too, I do youtube videos as well as streaming and the second monitor makes it easy to monitor my recording software (OBS). if you don't have the cash to spare for a new one find one on craigslist for cheap.
