First PC build help, DVD or CD Writer or Burner?

I'm doing my first PC build and I have everything with the exception of the DVD/CD writer/burner, motherboard, processor and CPU cooler. I don't know what to get for my CD's and DVD installations. I really don't have the money for a high end Blu-Ray/DVD/CD writer. So, what should I get? NOTE: I do have the disk copy of Windows 8 and it came with a Disk for a photo editing software.

build looks alright, though at this stage of the game, an AMD processor is better value.

Uhmm, not to sound like a dick however; did you even read the question or the description?

To be honest most DVD writers nowadays are really cheaply made so there is not much difference between one or the other so any LG or Samsung will do, LG has normally lasted me more but I do have samsungs that still work and are old as hell.

I would take the discs and a USB drive to a friends house and convert the USB into a bootable drive then copy the other disc to the drive.

The only time I usually burn disc anymore is when I buy a new xbox game and my brothers want me to burn them a copy so for myself a disc drive is not an essential part of a PC anymore.

So, I should get a CD or DVD writer? which would you recommend

The LG GH24NS95 you have selected noew should be fine unless you are going to be using it heavly, sorry for my nonsensical post earlier.

do they even sell standalone cd writers anymore? I didn't knew..  but if that is the case go for the DVD writer, to be honest I thought the CD only ones weren't produced anymore, also for the record a DVD writer can write CDs also, and the one in your build is perfect
