First Gaming PC Build. $2000 Max Budget

On that subject, what brand of thermal paste would be recommended? A similar concern is extra case fans. I guess water cooled builds might not need them but how would you determine if you needed one or more?

Thanks Uriel for the advice. I am Interested in your build and would like to know more about the storage you purchased such as which Samsung SSD model you decided on for boot up and the second one for storage.

I use Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste.  Works well.  You can also try Tuniq or Noctua.  Great stuff.  I recommend watching Logan's video on how to apply thermal paste before you begin building.  This is a vital step.

Here's my recommendation...

One of the best builds money can buy.  You'll need to go through and figure out what mechanical switch type you prefer.  You'll also need to decide on a mouse.  I can't really decide on these things for you.  This is largely based on personal preference.

As for case fans, you'll need to figure out how many fans come with the case you're getting.  Usually, cases come with a decent amount of fans pre-installed.  Most people tend to buy different case fans to help reduce noise.  Noctua makes some of the best fans for balance in performance and acoustics.

My 2 cents:

  • Get an i5. For gaming an i7 is unnecessary and wont really improve your fps.
  • Get 16GB of ram instead of only 8GB (helps with future proofing)
  • Get a 256GB ssd for your primary drive (128GB will fill up fast)
  • For your GPU, these cards would be good and can be found online for between $300-$350: AMD 7970, R9 280x, Nvidia GTX 680.
  • If you want to spend more to get even more performance in your games, you can wait for AMD's R9 290x or get an Nvidia GTX 780.

Last thing, if you are gaming on a single monitor buying 2 high end cards to crossfire/sli is unnecessary, and a waste of money imo.

Much appreciated DeusAres. Putting costs like shipping and tax into the mix I will probably have to ditch the second video card but that is still one powerful build that I am seriously considering emulating. Hopefully in the future I can add the second GPU and some more case fans for a cooler, quieter rig.

P.S. Thank you everyone for the excellent build ideas. Would be appropriate if I continued to post in this thread on the status of my build or a new thread?

Good points that I am definitely considering for my first build. I will probably wait a bit for the AMD R9 290x to be released and see the reviews . . . not to mention I will probably need more funds as the PC build piggy bank is often smashed around Xmas : /.

That's a sick pc you got there bro! I would suggest to wait for the R9 290X, as it seems that it performs better than the Gtx 780 (TekSyndicate posted something related to that), not to mention the price will probably be cheaper!

Good luck on your build! :)

you forgot www.Memoryexpress.com that's where i get %99 of my stuff had to order my CPU and video card from ncix and newegg as memory express wouldn't have the video cards for around 2 weeks and wouldn't be able to get the CPU i wanted.

Hello everyone.

My new build idea is vastly different (and better) then the previous one I was considering thanks to all of your wonderful suggestions. I have not made my final decisions yet for all parts but I thought I would run it past all of you for any final improvements.Need suggestions for peripherals such as keyboard, mouse, fans and how many etc. I also need a new headset as sadly mine has broken recently though I needed a better microphone anyway (current headset is a Turtle Beach Earforce PX 21).

Current build idea: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/1Qxp4

P.S. Thanks by the way for also introducing me to ca.pcpartpicker.com. Real handy website!
