Ok so for the past few months I've been slowly building my first gaming desktop, I did a little bit of research beforehand, but I think i may have rushed into it and now I'm worried. Ok so to start off, here's the parts i have so far: Motherboard: ASUS Z97-A ATX DDR3 2600 LGA 1150 Motherboards Z97-A CPU: Intel Core i5-4430 Quad-Core Desktop Processor 3.0 GHz 6 MB Cache LGA 1150 RAM: Kingston HyperX FURY 8GB Kit (2x4GB) 1600MHz DDR3 CL10 DIMM
(I got a cheap cd drive just to install OS)
memory: WD Blue 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 7200rpm
(I have yet to purchase a power supply, VRAM, and case, but here's what i want. )
VRAM: ASUS GeForce GTX 750Ti GDDR5 2GB power supply: Corsair Builder Series CX 600 Watt ATX/EPS 80 PLUS
So here's where I'm worried, I planned on my uncle helping with the build because he's good with computers but i think he may have screwed me. He lost the driver cd for the motherboard, also lost the manual that came with it, tried getting me to put some crappy videos cards in it, gave me some old power supply thats 250w to put in it. and i tried stopping him but he put on the cpu fan that came with it on without applying thermal paste. and he put the ram in wrong... I think i should just do it myself, I know i can find that driver cd though. He's trying to get me to use xp instead of 8.1, He also said that when building a computer, he said that I HAVE TO use a keyboard (atleast until the os is installed) that i have to use a keyboard and mouse with a ps/2 cable.... So is he an idiot? Does my first build sound ok?
I would put a GTX 960 in personally as the GTX 750 Ti are ok but lack VRAM for modern titles like GTA V which you'll need at least 2GB if not 4GB to run well.
An idiot, but I suppose he's only trying to help. I would've got all the parts at once. - A z97 is overkill for a 'non k' cpu but if you're after the extra features that that z97 offers then perhaps it was worth it.... As far as gaming is concerned a 750ti is ok for older gen games and a few current AAA titles @ <1080p @ medium-high (at best), but for future titles it wont cope too well. PSU wise dont put shitty units in builds, its a recipe for disaster. That corsair will do. VRAM????? Thats to do with the gpu champ. Ideally you'd want at minimum 3gb (r9 280 etc) for any type of longevity in a gaming rig. HDD - good choice. Decent enough drive that is ok enough to run an OS on. Motherboard drivers can be downloaded - what comes with the motherboard package are outdated anyway. - Go to the asus website to download em. Getting you to use XP, come on seriously???? As for the PS/2 kb - that mb doesnt even have the old legacy port. ~ its a LEGACY port. Old as the hills. usb kb will work just fine as they have done for many years.
Yep, he's an idiot. Yeah i totally regretted the motherboard i got, I think i may have wanted to make him jealous because i saw him looking at it online once and wanting it. Yeah i think i'll go to 4gb for the video card, i figured i'd be playing mainly older games, nothing too beefy. But just in case. Yeah he hates windows 8.1, he says that its horrible for gaming and that 7 is ok for games but xp is the best. I didn't believe him for a second though! Thank you for responding, I also considered getting a small ssd just for the os.
