First Build in Ten years

Hey everyone. This is my first post here and it's also my first post at any tech focused forum, so I have a lot to learn. Looking forward to it.

I'd like your thoughts on my build.

It will be for general usage (documents, spreadsheets, internet), light gaming (MMO's, survival horror, indie games, no fps), music, and movies, but not likely to buy blu ray though.

I would like to keep the price around $800 with the OS included and capable of overclocking a bit because I like to tinker. This is currently the cheapest I know to get it without sacrificing overclock capabilities.

The 200mm fan is for the front. I'd prefer a full tower, but that mid seems more than adequate. The ssd won't be my only means of storage.

Will a wifi adapter card and old sound blaster 5.1 card fit in there with that dual ported gpu?

Also, any advice on a keyboard and mouse would be great.

Thanks all.

you got a bad link or something. try to edit link

looks good but if it were me I'd step up to an 8 core

it looks like every thing you want should fit in the case. I notice you dont have a wifi card listed on your build out but asked if it would fit you should be able to use both PCI slots on the MOBO sound card and Wi-fi adapters generally do not have large profiles. you could always get a PCIE Wi-fi adapter. your graphics card will probably bloc one of the PCIE slots but it has two so that should work.

I agree with  fitchx

Disagree with the upgrade to an 8-core, though I am a fan of the 8320.

An upgrade to a 280 will put you right at $800 and give you a considerable boost when it comes to rendering, and gaming.

For peripherals I'd recommend Das Keyboards, but they can get pricey ($100+). I use the Ultimate with blue switches, it's quite nice.

Here is a build with an upgrade to a 280 and 8350, SSD  it is $15 over if you can somehow expand your budget to accommodate. The Pro version MOBO is a 6+2 powerphase, which will overclock far better than the 4+2 version. This at the cost of a smaller SSD 128 vs. 256. If that is not cool...look at a 2tb Hitachi deskstar HDD

I don't know if the 8350 is worth the money.. at that point I would point you to a non-overclocked i5 for better performance. Staying in the budget I just upgraded the case (in my opinion) and the GPU.. The GPU will be the most important thing for gaming and if you want the system to last a long time again.

All said, I would probably put the budget a bit higher if you plan on keeping the system for 10 years.. and wait til the end of the year when the new stuff comes out... It is a matter of months at this point instead of being a year+.

If you need to buy now, then I would recommend an intel devils canyon CPU over a 2 year old AMD FX if you can put some more money into it. You get a lot more performance per dollar and you can fit a lot more into the system for about the $1000 mark.

For a couple hundred more you can something like this:

More graphics and way more CPU power. More than an overclocked 8350.

I would consider this as well..

I read that you wanted to do light gaming and general usage. I don't disagree with any of the current suggestions, all very good and knowledgeable yet this setup may be more future proof.

This setup will include the latest z97 chipset, pci-x 3.0, Unlocked pentium and plenty of expandabilty. Don't get me wrong i'm not a fanboy, my current pc is AMD, im just all about price per dollar and the amd platform seems to be getting outdated.

Also consider the Compatibility Notes on the bottom of the PC partpicker page.. You will notice the case doesn't have USB 3.0. and MB will need BIOS update before Vishera can be seen.

The MB/PCU I picked were especially designed for each other, so you could have some fun with that.

The cooler selected is said to out-preform most 120 and some 240 liquid coolers. Yes its 60$ yet and cool anything you throw at it.

The video card selection is a flip of the coin. The r9 270 can put out higher max framerates yet the 750ti puts out higher min framerates. I choose 750ti for lower power requirements, better overclocking potential and better cooler design.

Memory selection is spot on, but for 10 dollars more you can upgrade to 1866 mhz. I went for a lower profile for any CPU cooler clearance issues, 1.5 volts. and XMP profiles. You could boost the clock speeds a little.

The case is the biggest difference in my opinion. I choose the Phanteks Pro Series because its the best of 2014. It gives you the all the features of a 250 dollar case for 100$. I know its twice the price yet in a future upgrade the last item to be upgraded is the case.. Most builders opt to but a new rig when they change the case. This way no matter what you do to the inside the outside will always look modern and new. It too has a 200mm fan included.

Like i said my opinion. I would love to see the comments go wild after this. The total estimated power usage of your plans are 344watts, and the one i picked are 207watts. Not too bad at all.

If the OP plans on doing upgrades over time, I would agree with you.. but if he doesn't plan on upgrading I would still stick with this:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/k6QdGX

It is a lot more performance on CPU and GPU side. Build to build, you are trading CPU and GPU money for case and CPU cooler money...

again.. if the OP plans on making incremental upgrades, then your idea is a good one.. save money now to upgrade later.

That intell isn't a k part. You want something that will get most bang for buck.

Imo rather stick with fx 6300 oc 4.5ghz and gtx 780 3g before spending anything else.

Even fx 4300 or the new G3258 will give you what you want. Just spend the rest on a high end gpu.

Upgrade to 8350 or 4790k 3 years from now when there 50% cheaper. Keep in mind you keep hardwear for a long time. What's 5 mins and $.70 worth of thermal paste going to matter.

Logitech for mmo mouse and keyboard

Corsair cherry red switches for fps and software appliances.

the 8350 prob won't be around for 3 years man... unless you wanna buy used.. and I wouldnt want a used overclocked processor... the xeon 1231v3 will kick the crap out of the 6300 and the 8350, even when they are overclocked to 4.5 ghz.... It is more expensive, but you save on cooler and motherboard.
