First build finshed, QUESTIONS!

Hello guys, finished my first pc build just for about a week ago. So now i got some questions that i hope that someone can answer. ;)

The post got very long but i hope you got time to read it. I have tried to mark the questions in fat text i you only want to read that.

To start with i am a bit conserned about my thermal paste on the cpu when i built the pc i first tested it on the mother board box and i used the orginall intel cooler. Then when i had placed it in the case i removed the intel cooler to fit my h100i. But i was really lazy so i didnt remove the old thermal paste from the intelcooler, much because I didnt know how to remove the paste.

So the first question should I clean the cpu and waterblock from the all the old thermal paste and buy some new and apply? Will it make a big difference?

I havent overclocked the cpu yet but i will probably in the future when i am more secure about how to do it. My gaming temeratures in WoW with everything set on ultra with tripple vertical rendering and so on after 3 hours my asus gtx 670 hit max 77 C and the Cpu max 60 C on the higest core. Btw i run a intel 3570k. In prime95 after about 45 mins i think i had like max 66 C. Yes i should run it longer but i havent got the times yet ;)

I got some Corsair CL9 1600Mhz  2x4 Gb installed. First when i checked them in the bios they ran at 1333Mhz(?Or similar) but i turned them up to 1600Mhz and booted but when i open the Ai suite that comes with the Sabertooth z77 mobo and check system info they say that the Maxbandwidth is 667 Mhz on both sticks.

Is this something to worry about or does the program tell the wrong numbers?

On the Sabertooth mobo it is 2x 40mm fans that sounds like hell so i turned them off, does it matter now when i havent overclocked or something?

Also i found the Themal Radar program very usefull cause i could set a curv for the fanspeed at sertain temperatures. It worked great untill i was going to change the curv slightly and i got an Error that says " A RPC ( Remote procedure call) didnt reach". So now i cant change the speeds anymore.

What is an RPC error and how do you get rid of it?

Or can you recommend anyother good fancontroll program where u can easly set the speeds?

I have tested Speed fan but i dont have a clue how it works. I didnt like the built in fan controller either on the Corasir 600t cause the voltage range goes from about 8.5 to 12.

I am from Sweden so be patient with my grammar :P

I will try to upload some pictures of the build that i am very pround of! xD

Here is what i think:

1. The GPU's temt is not that bad but when you ask about temperatures you should always give the ambian temperatures because we don't know what was your room temp. Your CPU temp on the other hand seems little high because I am running same CPU 4.4GHz with H100 and getting ambian temperatures around 65 celsius. Are you running your radiator fans in push or pull? Yes you should never use the included thermal paste theyr most of the time cheapest possible.

2. What program did you use? CPU-Z trusted software and i recommend using it

3. I dont it is healthy even if you haven't overclocked anything, cause the power phases can run pretty hot. Recommended solution is to remove the heatshield instrucktions should be included with your mother board.

4.  No idea. Try googling and see what you can find out.

5. Speed Fan requires some confiqurating but works greate once that has been done.

Okay thanks for the answer, I will go and buy new thermal paste as soon as I can. I Normally have around 20-25 C in my room and i am idling at around 30 C. I run the H100 in pull with 2 noctua nf f12. I want to have them in pull so i can fit them in the speciall roof area that the Corsair 600t got.

For the temperaturs i Use CPUID HW Monitor but if CPU-Z is better i can use it instead, np.

I dont want to remove the Shield around the mobo as I like the look, i might consider to buy some quiter 40 mm fans to replace the orginall ones.

I will take a look at speed fan, will search around for a tuturial for it or something.

I which Logan could release the Overclocking video that he promised for a while ago ;)

1. Yes, get new thermal paste. Remove the old stuff from the CPU with rubbing alcohol, and then put on some new stuff. You don't need a lot. Just a pea sized dot in the middle of the CPU. Don't spread it; let the cooler spread it for you when you bolt it down. I would suggest getting some Arctic Cooling MX-4. It's probably the best stuff on the market right now, and you can get a nice sized tube for around $10.

2. The memory frequency is always multiplied by two, so your ram is running at 1333mhz according to that program. It sounds like you didn't save your settings when you set them to 1600 in the bios. Try upping it to 1600mhz again and save your changes when you leave the bios. If you still have problems then you might have to update your bios.

3. The fans on the motherboard probably don't really matter all that much. Most motherboards don't have fans in the first place, so you should be fine with them off even when overclocked. The only reason to turn them on is if you notice motherboard temperatures getting too high.

4. I have no clue.

5. Speed Fan is supposed to be nice. ASUS should also have its own fan controlling program that you can download from their website. It should be with your motherboard drivers and utilities. You could always get a 5.25" bay fan controller too.

Is Artic Silver 5 as good also recommended? I have a lokal store nearby that sells it. Feels stupid to buy thermal paste from the internet for 10 $ and then get a shipping fea for 10$ ;)

Is CPUID a good program to use for monitoring temps etc or should i download CPU-Z that the last guy recommended?

And also does it matter if you have the fans in push or pull when talking temps?

As for your RAM clock.

The newer Asus boards have a fail safe where in:

If it doesn't like something in your custom settings it will start to clock things down.

I don't suggest using the Ai Suite for much of anything but monitoring , if you must. I've had problems with the Fan controls along with un-successful OC.

To get your RAM to factory spec , reset your bios to default then go through and set your RAM up manually according to specs on the package. As soon as you try to use Ai to try and OC it will clock your RAM down.

Just so you don't forget anything, you need to set the DRAM Freq, CPU NB Freq, HT Link Freq, CL, TRC, TRP, TRAS, DRAM Voltage and you may also need to bump the NB Voltage a hair. Check the manufatures website for the specs to get the most out of your RAM.

Went to the bios and reseted it. I go to the advanced mode and then to Ai Tweaker where i changed the Ai overclock tuner to X.M.P instead of Auto. When I do that the yellow text at the top if the page tells me that the targeted DRAM Speed is 1600 Mhz. I saved the settings and reseted. When i go to the EFI BIOS start page or "easymode page" it says Total Memory: 8192 mb (DDR3 1600Mhz) so i think it worked :)

I am a bit newbie with this so i didnt understand what you said above john but i think this worked aswell.

I went to the corsair website under and saw that the performance profile where XMP thats why i used it.

EDIT: Downloaded CPU-Z and saw checked the memory and it was 800 mhz and as Vortex88 said you multiply it with 2 so i seems that my memory runs at 1600Mhz now :)

Hmm...What is the core speed in Cpu-z ? It says that the speed is 4100 Mhz with a multiplier of x 41 and 100 mhz bus speed.

Did it overclock itself when i changed the Ai Tweaker profile to X.M.P when fixing the RAM? Or is it normal?

Under the Processor\speci it tells my Cpus full name @ 3.40 Ghz is this just the orginal cpu info? :S

As i said i am new to this and sorry if i ask dumb questions, im confused ;)

push or pull temps will be similar, you'll get better temps if you run push pull.

Yeah you have overclocked it =P notice how hard it is these days, and sorry i should have typed coretemp coretemp for thermal monitoring and CPU-Z for looking the right memory speed.

In CPU-Z "speed is 4100 Mhz" meaning that your core speed is 4.1GHz  and the other two that you got base clock of 100MHz wich is multiplied by 41 eaqualing total of 4.1GHz per core.

Under the Processor\speci it tells my Cpus full name @ 3.40 Ghz is this just the orginal cpu info? :S -> yes it is!

lol...nice i have overclocked the cpu without knowing a shit what i was doing :P

Okay i will try out core temp for monitoring the temps and also put on some new thermal paste and then I think that i have got rid of all my worries for this time,

THANKS a lot! :)

Np glad to pass down the knowledge =)
