Firefox keeps freezing

I notice firefox is using up to 900 megabytes of memory, and at times, as much as 30% CPU.

Firefox also goes into 'not responding' mode quite often. I don't know if it's virtual memory, or what.

It's funny, I had this problem on my 4690k but when I upgrade to X99 I have no such problem. I'm thinking it may have to do with virtual memory or hardware acceleration, but not totally sure, I wasn't able to really ever correct it 100%, I ended up using Firefox developer and that seemed to improve it ALOT.

Firefox developer?

"Built for those who develop the web."

Well then, why doesn't regular firefox work? :P

@Kai is a firefox nerd he may be able to help you.

Could you post your extensions here? You may have one sucking up more memory than it should (it may be mischievous!)

I had same problem on my X220 w/ 8GB RAM in Arch Linux

Yup, from personal experience you may be running an extension that's either inefficiently written and/or hogging up memory, or have a mischievous extension.

Not to hijack this thread, but any help would be appreciated because i actually have the same problem. I was hesitant to post this because of Kai last time I mentioned this but it is an annoying issue. I'd rather use FF but the way it is running for me I can't.

All browsers have no extensions installed and have both be recently reinstalled on the same 850 Pro SSD. Latest versions. Running X99 here. I think it may be something with hardware acceleration. (As toggling it on/off sometimes solves the issue for a while) This is my usage right now with just this web page open and nothing else.

I only occasionally have the not responding thing but it does hang sometimes. This is especially evident when watching videos (even at low resolutions) or when loading a page in another window. It also tends to bug out when I open new windows and tabs and try to separate and combine them and drag across monitors.

So like I said not to hijack your thread but I figured I'd share my experience too and hopefully we both can get some answers. I created a thread about this a while ago and didn't get anywhere.

Try the x64 developer edition, I haven't had a single problem with Firefox crashing or locking up since switching to that edition.

Alright I'll check it out and report back.
Thanks!

There.

I would disable all of them. If it solves the problem, re-enable them one at a time till the issue returns - then you will know which one is causing the issue.

If disabling all of them doesn't fix it, the problem is else where.

Disabling all seemed to reduce usage down to around 100-150 megs. Then I turned back on the stuff I needed (no script, adblocker, avast and blur), and it knocked usage back up to 500-550, and CPU back to 30%.

Yeah, I dunno why those add-ons use so much, but I like having them, so long as firefox doesn't go into 'not responding' mode. I think the OP said I was using around 700-900 memory at that point, so that was probably the upper limit of what my computer could handle.

Is there a hardware solution to this? Get more memory, maybe? I have around 7 gigs, but a lot of gets used up on background stuff, I guess.

Mischievous extension, heman!

I bet it's Avast.... why is that even there?

I think getting another 8GB would help, honestly we are getting to the point where 16Gb is going to be the normal, probably within 6 months.

This is really bad trend

Kinda crazy what the memory demands are these days. Hope programmers aren't just getting lazy.

You mean with memory? Yeah, I have to agree.
