Finding the Bottleneck in my Network setup/ Increase my upload/download rate

So I currently I have a motorola SBV522 modem connected by coaxial cable over to a motorola SB6182 which is lastly connected to an Asus RT-N12 router. Here is a diagram of the setup where the arrows represent coaxial cables.

SBV522 > SB6182 > Asus RT-N12

What part in this setup is causing a bottleneck? If there is no bottleneck what are the options for increasing the upload/download rate of this setup? I am interested in building my own router with the ability to cache.

I am just so sick of being in the middle of nowhere with awful internet and google fiber nowhere in sight.

I’m so confused right now…

We don’t have cable in SA so that could be why.

  • I take it the asus router is connected via ethernet not coaxial.
  • Why do you have 2 cable modems?
  • Why is one cable modem connected to the other?

Disregarding that - The asus router only has 100mb’s ethernet. Both modems can do 150mb’s+ so you probably have a bottleneck there.

Something like this will probably remove the bottleneck as the 1gb’s connection can handle it. Again I’m not familiar with cable so someone correct me if I’m wrong regarding speeds of the cable modems.

#edit: can you post a speedtest of what you currently achieve?

I honestly don’t know why, the house came with this setup and probably could be done a lot better.

Here is my speed test.
5.84 mbps download
10.7 mbps upload

do you have more than one NAT?

the ASUS should be in AP mode if you want to keep NAT on something upstream

EDIT:

No other NATs, they are just modems, not modem router combos

can you remove the SBV522? it is not DOCSIS 3

the SB6182 is DOCSIS 3 call your ISP and check that this model is supported by them, if so add its MAC to your ISP account.

move away from SBV522, use SB6182 as modem

EDIT:

do you have phone service thru this ISP?? that would explain the use of this old modem.
you should be using the SB6182 for internet but they could have given the older SBV522 for the phone that SB6182 would not support?

if you get to the modems status page you can post the sync noise/levels, try http://192.168.100.1 admin admin/admin password kinda default passwords if “needed”

you could have a bad line that needs repairs

What internet speeds are you paying for? That’s the most important question. If you’re only paying for 5mb internet, no modem or router in the world will help you.

@Phantom is exactly right. It depends on if you are looking at WAN (internet) bottlenecks or LAN (local network) bottlenecks. In the case of the later, there may be things that can be changed to improve performance. On the WAN side, you may be limited by bandwidth to your ISP. All depends on what you are looking for.
