Hello!
I need some help, I've been looking for somewhere to get ~5-10km of single mode fiber optic cables cheap (not that big of a deal how much they cost tbh). I've found some spools on ebay, but idk if they will work. I'm not very good at this. My parents seriously need to get a real internet connection. We are considering putting a fiber line across a small lake, because they have FTTH on the other side. We don't really care if it's "not a good idea" as long as it will work. I'm tired of 2/1 mbps wimax whenever i'm home for a visit (especially during christmas). What do you guys recommend, is it possible to do this for under $1k (only counting the cable)?
I would love as much info about this as possible, I really like networking, but it's not really something I know much about.
I've found cables like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Single-Mode-fiber-SMF-28-Optical-Bare-Fiber-10000-m-10km-/310959153468?hash=item48669c213c:g:QIEAAOxyPKNTlvOJ
It doesn't say much (that I understand anyway), any thoughts?
If you need more info, just ask!
Thanks!
you wanna make sure you get outdoor rated fibre cables. And single mode fiber is good up to ~60 miles before the signal needs to be boosted.
Have you looked at these?

Because you will want outdoor and most likely armored cable as well if you are running it though a lake.
If you have line of sight then wireless will be a cheaper and easier option.
If you go fibre you'll also need to get the tools you need for terminating the cable, or get someone to do it for you. And you'll need to make sure you get the right kind of transceivers for the type of cable you're using.
If the cable isn't duplex you may need to run two cables, I'm not sure how it works with single mode, I don't think you can have up and down on a single strand but I have seen single cables with two strands inside. But if it is a single strand cable you will probably need to run two of them.
