I have a GTX 960 and a 1080ti installed in my system. The 960 should be the primary GPU (it is installed in the top x16 slot of my motherboard (Designare EX X399)).
I wanted to install Fedora 27, however I can not get the live version to boot. I even tried the low graphics mode but that does not work either. I get stuck during dracut init - and after some time it enters emergency mode. Ubuntu does boot - but only if i disable nouveau with “nouveau.modeset=0”.
Did you try with Fedora with the ‘nomodeset’ boot parameter?
If that didn’t work it’s worth trying disabling secure boot from the BIOS but that shouldn’t be the issue here since you haven’t installed the proprietary Nvidia drivers yet…
@SlaterTh90 hope you don’t mind me mentioning my problem in your post because I am having a similar problem as you are. I can’t install Kubuntu onto a fresh brand new SSD that I installed on my Ivory Bridge Asus Laptop. I think there are several reasons why I can’t finish the installation (that is when the live USB decides to work like it should) of Kubuntu. I thought maybe if there was a way to replace the Linux included with Kubuntu with the latest stable Linux kernel ( which is version 4.14.15) that might cure or maybe create a workaround and actually get the USB live stick to work like it should. I know there isn’t anything wrong with the USB. Also, I thought maybe since I had Ubuntu 17.10 installed before on my hard drive (it died about a week ago hence the new SSD) when my hard drive died it screwed up my UEFI and I don’t know how to change the options inside the UEFI to properly setup a new drive, was another idea I had that could be the cause of why I am having so much trouble installing Kubuntu. The reason I am posting my problem here is I thought if I mention my problem and some reasons why I think @Shadowbane is having so much trouble, it might spark some more ideas from our fellow members, and increase the chances of both @SlaterTh90 and my problems getting solved. I have posted a link to the Post I started in case someone needs more information to spark ideas. Create a custum Kubutu Live USB Stick.
Have you tried removing the drive, installing the OS on the drive in a different machine, and then putting it back in? Perhaps loading any needed drivers while doing such? I have done this on really old machines that were being stubborn with success.
Have you checked the iso hash to make certain it is consistent? I have had issues with this in the past. Particularly with my favorite distro, LXLE. A number of times i tried downloading directly, through different torrents, and no dice. It would run but have errors during or after installation because the iso was messed up.
For the OP - I believe there are issues (read - it doesn’t work) with Wayland and nVidia. Are you using the default Gnome, or another spin of Fedora? You might want to try something that doesn’t use Wayland by default and see if that can at least get your foot in the door with a bootable system. It should still be able to run X but maybe there are complications, especially running two graphics cards. Perhaps remove the secondary card until after the OS install works?
For Shadowbane - I would definitely try the steps mentioned above using another machine to install the OS on the drive and confirm the MD5, SHA-256, or similar. I will make another post over on your thread.
I removed the 1080ti from the system and it still did not work. I then re-downloaded fedora and made a new boot stick - that solved the problem and I was able to install Fedora successfully.
So I guess the stick was the problem all along. Next time i am going to check that first…
Glad you got it working. Nvidia is a bit of a pain. Just for reference make sure you use the rpmfusion or negativo17 Nvidia drivers. Don’t manually install them
It’ll be fine until you have to upgrade things or it breaks something. Best bet is when it does, uninstall them if possible and use one from the mentioned repos as they wont break.
just FYI, 10 series has issues on Fedora. I tried it with my razer stealth & core w/ 1060 and constantly ran into issues. if you haven’t tried ubuntu gnome, its a smoother and much more support. If you looking for “out of the box”
