Fedora 44 kde kernel 7.2.5 black screen

Hello,

I updated one of my two laptops which are both running for fedora 44 KDE , and when I rebooted my main powerhouse system, it completely went black like after the reboot. There is a new kernel version fixing some of the issues people had before, fails to load sddm or anything graphical that isnt the grub menu , luckily have my backups and the previous kernels that still load up perfectly fine. It also released a new version of Nvidia driver which laptop does have a discrete Nvidia 3070 TI input from my troubleshooting and searching it’s most likely the kernel because before I rebooted, I double checked that it compiled properly and finish compiling so it shouldn’t be that unless there’s a severe bug in it

Just a heads up for anyone before updating and if anyone has updated and figured out how to fix this issue, please let me know.

The troubleshooting steps I did is I rebuilt in a nvidia drivers on that specific kernel and that did nothing, I also restored from BTRFS backups that completely wiped any of the new packages that came with the update still nothing

commands used:
sudo akmods --kernels 7.2.5-200.fc44.x86_64 --rebuild --force
sudo dracut --force --kver 7.2.5-200.fc44.x86_64~
systemctl status akmods.service
journalctl -fu akmods.service
pgrep -a akmods
ls -l /var/cache/akmods//

here is what is currently working, praise be to backups

Correction: it might actually be than nividia driver cause my other laptop which is a 9 year old T470 works fine , I am I might be mistaken oooops sorry :pensive_face::sweat_smile:

Can you disable the AMD GPU in the BIOS and see if that helps?

You’ll want to look at your previous boot’s journal log to get an idea for what may have failed, e.g.:

journalctl --boot -1 --no-hostname

I’m still on 610.57.04 and have no issues with 7.2.5.

Nope unfortunately I can not do it via bios but I going to figure out how to do it via terminal if it isn’t too risky for my liking

Or disable the Nvidia and run on the iGPU for testing? That way you know it is Nvidia problem.

Weird that BIOS doesn’t have an option to select GPU. What is the normal process to switch, or does it decide on which GPU automatically?

Try newest drivers. Did you get them from rpm-fusion? Can you redo that?

It is kind of bad that the distro and rpm-fusion are separate entities, so the Fedora update isn’t necessarily testing for the foreign (to them) drivers.

Shots in the dark only.

Ya I saw that annoying once I noticed that wasn’t an option. There is a way to do via gui but it is unreliable and could just break graphics all together or just not apply the changes. Rog software on both windows and Linux kinda sucks at least my experience with it but I am go to try some other stuff once I get home from my chemo appointment

There are some reports of a regression in the AMD GPU firmware causing this. Hopefully will be fixed soon.

They released the official fixed version of the firmware . so depending on which fix you guys did reverse it safely or if you did the one I did I updated my document so that it shows how to reverse everything back to normal.
