Father's day pc build

My dad mentioned his PC was running slow. Was thinking about building this for father's day.
CPU: Intel Xeon E5-2670 x2 @$60 each off of Ebay
Heatsink: Hyper 212 Evo x2 @$25 each after rebate
MoBo: Open box ASRock EP2C602-4L/D16 @$275 off of Newegg
RAM: 4x4GB G.Skill Ripjaws X DDR3-1600 @$66
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO 500GB @$150
Case: Rosewill RISE ATX Full Tower @$90
PSU: EVGA 750w 80+ Bronze @$49 after rebate
$800 flat after rebates and before shipping
Quadruple dog dare someone to build a faster PC for less.
Sure it is a bit of overkill, but nobody else's dad around here will have a 16 core, 32 thread machine.

Your dad's PC is too old to be upgraded and make faster? Would be less expensive if you have a good base to start with.
Anyway your build here looks really sweet but you forgot to add a GPU. A decent one would make it cost more like 1000$ than 800$.

Lol... I'm pretty sure it has ribbon cables.

Completely forgot seeing as how he doesn't game. I could probably grab something that is decent off of Craigslist for less than $200 easy. All he really needs is something that can do 1080p with an HDMI plug.

Even if he doesen't game there's no integrated GPU on those CPUs so you'll have to buy one.

Wow, that's like 15 years old PC at least.

Yeah, that's what I was getting at. Just forgot. Like I said, as long as it can do 1080p and has an HDMI, it'll be fine.

Maybe it doesn't have ribbon cables lol... It is definitely old enough though that nothing would be usable. Everything is on it's dying breath anyway. Wouldn't be opposed to using the case, but I don't think the motherboard would fit.

Sorry about that, I misread it for sure.

Something like a GT730 2GB is pretty good to accelerate video and UI.

Looks good to me. I don't know anything about graphics cards under $100.

If he doesn't game what does he use his PC for?

that seems like it's overkill, and you'd be better off even just getting a laptop and replacing the hard drive with an SSD

agreed an i3 with an ssd = most amazing laptop ive ever owned and also the cheapest laptop ive ever owned =)

You can get a 5450 for like 20 bucks, the cards between $30-60 are like never a good buy really.

Seeing as how your dad has a really old computer right now, I highly doubt that he would need the horsepower associated with that kind of build. So the power aspect has no real purpose other than to brag. If he is keeping computers for a long period of time (and I am assuming that he is), then I would suggest looking into getting new components instead of buying used. For most people who upgrade regularly, getting used parts is no big deal, but if he plans on running this thing for 10 years, the shortened life span of used parts might have an impact. Additionally, older people tend to just leave their computer on for long periods of time or only barely utilize the cpu, so most of the time, this thing will be sitting at or near idle. Two 32nm, 115w tdp cpus are going to use a lot of power and dump a lot of heat for doing not a lot of work. For the same price as those cpus and mobo, you could easily get a nice, brand new A10-7870k or i5 build. Much better power use, heat, and reliability. I am partial to apus as I see them as better all around parts, so maybe the 7870k (which has the new wraith cooler already, so an aftermarket cooler need not apply) or the Bristol Ridge cpus being announced at computex would be the direction I went.

I do have an I3 laptop just laying around. It is dreadfully slow, but I'm sure that it is probably just the HDD. Would probably be a better option; cheaper at the very least. To be honest I had forgotten I even had it until you guys mentioned it. An SSD would probably spruce it right up. Probably the route I'll end up going.

I was just having a bit of fun wondering what his reaction would be to the raw power of two Xeon CPUs. Plus I had a good laugh putting the parts list together.

Hey I still use IDE and it does perfectly fine 3:<

Pics or it didn't happen lol
Very first PC I built had IDE. Thankfully, back then "cable management" was not yet in my vocabulary.

I'll PM you. Never challenge me on this stuff.

i also upgraded the ram to 8gb from 4gb (unnecessary though i garbed the 4gb sick out of a dead laptop so it was free, i wouldn't have upgraded otherwise)

it matters how advanced his dad is. But if he just adds an SSD it will probably speed up.

You need a gfx card, plus an audio card, and some usb cards. The IO on that board lacks any audio, and the board only has two usb 2.0 ports on the rear io. There are 4 more ports that can be accessed via header, and one type A port on the board for an internal usb boot drive. Soooo a 4 port usb 3.0 card is in order.
