Family Linux distro for standard people coming from XP

OK so i need a good distro for a 2004 HP PC

  • 40gb HDD
  • 2.4ghz celeron m
  • 1gb ram
  • VGA graphics (I think)

k so my mum need it for emails and internet

Little brother needs for Minecraft and flash games

Other brother needs it for school work, youtube, word stuff like that, oh and Facebook.

Step dad needs it to google car parts and weather etc. If its not simple he will put his fist through the screen.

They do very light gaming (flash, mc). They use internet and word processin. I was thinking maybe Mint, zorin, manjaro or ubuntu. They can barely get by on XP.

Thanks in advance for the help.

PS. Would like two accounts and easy updating (possibly over team viewer)

how good are you with linux? get arch with lxde and make it look like windows xp. lxde works almost the same and it's really lightweight. manjaro will probably work. i have an old pc with a amd 64 x2 5000+ with 3gb ddr2 and it can't run ubuntu. i believe there is a ubuntu version with lxde which might work well.

For those specs, you can use whatever you want, but I would recommend taking a little look at VectorLinux. It's a very compact Slackware based distro, that will make that older system fly. It comes with easy software center, full word processing, web browsing, emailing, spreadsheets, vector graphics, and gimp pre-installed, all optimized for best performance on older systems and systems with very little resources (that's computers that have much less RAM and processing power than a 10 year old x86 Celeron PC like yours! This distro will run on systems with less than 100 MB of RAM and less than 4 GB of hard disk space). If you run it on a powerful system like yours, it really flies.

The entire GUI of VectorLinux is modeled after Windows XP.

+1 use whatever...

But if it was me and I had such limited specifications I would be wanting the most from my hardware and so I would be using Linux Mint 17 “Qiana” MATE with XBMC addon.
