Fallout 3 and NV Trouble

Hello everyone,

I wasn't really sure where to post this, but this seems like the best topic area so here it goes.

So, I'm sure plenty people have heard of the fallout series games crashing. I have personal experience with this. I played Fallout NV for a while non-modded and modded. But a little while back I ran into a problem where I would try to start a new game or load a previous save, and the game just wasn't having it. I searched the web and ending up doing a fresh install and started from scratch. This did work the first time around. Months went on and I realized "Oh wow, I miss playing Fallout 3, I should probably pick that up on Steam. So I did. I was so excited to hit New Game and let the journey begin. Crash. "Hmmm... that's odd, lets try again maybe settings too high"? Crash. So I did my research and it turns out Fallout 3 and Windows 7 don't get along very well. Now I ventured all over the web to find out solutions to the problem, and there are so many to choose from and try, but for some odd reason none seemed to work for me. Go frustrated and a few months went by. Oh lets try playing Fallout NV. Crash on loading saved game. "Maybe the mods"? Checked load order everything seems fine. Try again. Crash. "Okay, lets start from scratch, lets remove the mods and try vanilla". Crash. Try a New Game. Crash "Uh- oh." I'm getting the same results as Fallout 3 now for NV as well. Now I'm researching again to see if I can find a solution. The solutions I've tried that I can remember are:
- 1.7 Patch (FO3)
- Removing mods and starting fresh
- Unofficial Fallout Patch
- The whole play without Windows Live (even though I don't think the Steam version uses it)
- Windowed mode
- Disabling AA and AF (there was even something with Nvidia settings)
- The multi-core CPU fix (something to do with a .dll file)
- Disabling .Net
- Renaming "Music" File
- Run as Admin
- Run in compatibility mode
- Disabling other monitor
- Editing .ini file
- Turn off all auto saves
- Turning of HDR
- Fresh install
This is all on the vanilla game, no mods installed. This was also all done over the course of a few months where I would try new things here and there. Now with the announcement of Fallout 4 I have been sucked again into trying to get these games to work.
There are a few changes from the previous months. I have...
- Switched to a new case
- New Motherboard
- New SSD for games
- New CPU
- I uninstalled steam and moved it to the new SSD as well as my Steam library, and Nexus Mod Manager. Now the drivers for everything are up to date, I'm running no mods at all, haven't even downloaded any yet. Still getting same issue. Fallout 3 crashes when clicking New Game and Fallout NV crashes instantly after beginning cut seen after getting shot. I'm not sure where to go from here, I though maybe some out there may have solution or an idea.
PC Specs:
CPU: i7-4790K
Motherboard: Asus Z97 Pro
RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz
GPU: Reference GTX 680
SSD for games: Samsung 840 Pro
Also I use a software called Display Fusion which lets you customize your desktop, as well as a software called f.lux which helps dim the screams during certain times to reduce eye strain. I have one monitor vertical and one horizontal, the horizontal being the one I use for gaming. I just don't see these causing a problem, but you never know.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, sorry for the short story of a post.
If you have any questions, I will be happy to try and answer them to the best of my ability.

Alright, I'm not going to lie to you. It will take you a good hour or two to get Fallout 3 running. I highly and strongly recommend you watch the Gopher video series on modding Fallout 3:

He also made one for modding Fallout New Vegas:

If you follow along with the videos, you should be able to run both games hopefully.

go make sure you have an unmodded complete save of fallout 3
rumor mill is that fallout 4 will import it

That rumor is false. Really false.

I suspect the rumor false as well considering a good outcome in Fallout 3 would have been required for what's in the trailer.

This fixed the new game crash for me. http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/17209/?

Interesting, I have both of these installed on steam on windows 8.1 and I have yet to have an issue with either, I don't use any compatability options or escalated admin privaleges.. they just run flawlessly.

Currently replaying 3 now, after which I will replay nv and then if 4 isnt out by the time I totally kill these two to death will play FO 2+Tactics and Wasteland 2 as a stop gap measure :D

Thanks for the reply wolfleben, I actually watched most of Gopher's videos when I first started out modding. Great videos. I'll take another look through them to see if I may have missed anything.

Thanks for the reply Naspear. I have one question about the link. Is this switching the game to play with the Intel integrated graphics or is this going to help run it with my 680?

I used to have no problems with Fallout NV, but since I got FO3 it all went down hill.
I wish I had your luck flazza. Enjoy the games, there great!

i wouldnt even try to make fallout 3 stable on win7 and above, i tried around for hours and i couldnt even get it stable without mods (besides bugfixes) always CTD or freeze after few minutes of play.

if you can get fallout NV to run stable, use the Tale of two Wastelands mod to port fallout 3 right into NV.
there are also a lot of mod fixes on the TotW forum to make fo3/NV versions of mods work together.

another question: after upgrading your mobo and cpu, did you reinstall windows? changing to much around can mess with the system a lot.
