My question exactly. How am I suppose to trust people who do attack actual sources on what is Fake News.
I don't like this strong and yet out of control news outlets the crazier conservatives have on the internet, it's practically giving birth to neofacism now I would argue, because the neoliberalism on the DNC's camp wasn't bad enough.
But I can't be trusting people whom have pushed people's buttons to bring these people to the point. Trump was an irrational choice I did not make (he sold out like Hillary pretty fast, I knew that was going to happen).
But to post 25/7 Anti-Trump propaganda on Trump instead of discussing valid and common issues (social issues, economical issues, etc.) was extremely arrogant and reckless of the mainstream media and the Democrats, especially since they attacked on social issues too much. Although let's be honest, Trump and a fraction (not all obviously) of his supporters are making these social issues a real problem, they aren't helping.
Being biased towards a political candidate =/= making up shit.
I think that most of us have seen that this site is not at all immune to fake news. Just look at the amount of retarded shit that some members had posted in the election topic. Even retarded posts from 4chan that should have been obvious to a 6 year old made its way here.
So how do we fight it? Growing a brain capable of critical thinking is a good start.
You realize the concept of fake news means that the internet allows us to combat that right? Before it was just taken for granted that the news told the truth, but now with the internet people have to come to terms with the fact that there are contradictory outlets reporting on issues such that one gets exposed for being a lie in comparison to the other. In other words, there was always fake news, or news that got spun to fit an agenda, but now we have the capacity to see it for what it is when before people took it for granted that the fake news was just real news without ever realizing that it was also in fact fake.
Sure advertizers are going to try their best to fool people into thinking that marketing is real news, but just practice critical literacy skills and you'll be fine. In fact, the widespread availablility of critical literacy is only a recent invention so it should be no surprise that most people are lacking.
Also people give too much credit to AI, of course it's going to get confused by the fake news it's an unthinking machine. That's what's getting facebook in trouble recently for allowing fake news in the feed.
Liars have been peddling bullshit for centuries already and people, even bullshitters themselves, have been buying it for centuries too. It's nothing new. It's one of those things you can never get away from, no matter what form it takes. It's up to each of us as individuals to discern what is or isn't a lie and we've been doing it for centuries already. Some are particularly gullible, will click the "this will make your dick bigger" link without stopping for a moment, while others are way more discerning but in general most people know enough to know when they're being bullshitted.
That's not to say that a particularly gifted liar can't come along and pull the wool over your eyes either ... we're all vulnerable to being deceived. If someone comes along and says to you though, "I decide what is or isn't lies and then tell you what to believe" ..... who except the most gullible of us all would let them do that?
That's a great article. The fake hate crimes could be it's own thread it is so pervasive and numerous. One thing I liked about a politics thread is it worked as a saftey valve. It protected the tech area and tech news from politics. Once that safety valve is removed you get politics bleeding out everywhere.
This is a new list of "fake" news sites. Ironically this will probably have the opposite effect if they want to keep people from going to those sites. Is it propaganda or not?
Reading ALL sources and make your own conclusions. For me I feel safer just going to the "fake" news sites. I've had enough of the "professionals".
That safe feeling is just your personal bubble. You need to look for independent outlets that attack both sides. When you see that a particular website is promoting one side exclusively and attacking the other, that's a propaganda site that shouldn't be trusted. Regardless of how safe you feel about it.
I don't need to look for "independent" news. That's just another word that has been jacked by many not so independent outlets. People think that if they put together two opposite you're gonna get the whole, that is a fallacy. Both sides can be missing important information. My "bubble" gravitates to what is more accurate, not one sided attacks or the popular labels. We are all prone to error, but some more so.
We need to remember that there are REAL victims of fake news. These poor people were told by Fake news sites that a Trump win was impossible. Those of us who went to actual real news sites were not surprised but some of these people will apply for jobs and be asked,"were you that insane person on youtube"? Remember youtube is forever. There is an actual playlist of the victims of fake news on youtube.
Corporate media is losing their monopoly on the delivery of the oligarchs' message. They got it totally wrong on Brexit and Trump. Now they have the gall to call those who dare disagree or have a different perspective than them "fake news"?
Any media outlet that talks about "fake news" unironically is actually fake news. Corporate media needs to be left to die. They are literally in their death throes and this is a last gasp effort to hold onto their empire. It's not working, and only the mentally enslaved believe anything these media outlets have to say.
