External GPU Dock Under Linux

So i have a System76 Gazelle 2017 Model with a Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-H USB 3.0 xHCI Controller (rev 31)
with USB C connector. Been scouring internet for success stories on using an external gpu dock with this under linux but not much luck.
Anyone here had any success?

I’ve gotten it working with an older laptop using a mPCIe adapter, never done so with USB c (never tried.)

I’d test other PCIe hot swap devices first to make sure that your model’s implementation is working properly, and go with a dock that doesn’t need any special software to work if you plan on experimenting.

Here a (audio) story about Martin (Wimpress, of Ubuntu MATE fame,) testing a Razor Core that is connected via Thunderbolt:

I don’t think running a GPU over USB is possible/practical. Thunderbolt/mPCI-E would most likely be needed, as USB doesn’t have DMA, direct PCI-E protocol support, or the required bandwidth.

If u have USB3 it wont work well as its not enough bandwidth, you would need thunderbolt which is the same style USB c port but is 40gbs bandwidth vs 5gbs

so i think this is where i was confused thanks for the info. Ill just use the hdmi connector to external display and keep playing games on my windows rig
