Can someone explain to me why I only get 1-2 Mbps download for steam, chrome, etc, When the speed I'm paying for is 15Mbps? Does this have to do with my router?
I'm sure I'm not the only who doesn't understand this? Thanks!

Internet bandwidth is measured in bits (indicated by lowercase "b"), while file transfer, such as steam downloads, are measured in bytes (indicated by uppercase "B"). There are 8 bits in a single byte. So 15Mb/s = 1.875 MB/s
mega bit = advertised speed
mega byte = speed shown on PC
different meanings. You are getting pretty good download speeds with your connection speed.
for example i have 76Mbps download speed but actual download speed is between 8 and 9 meg
Im connecting at 76 Mega Bit per seconds but i download at 8 or 9 Mega Bytes per second.
(think i got them round the right way if not reverse them and feel free to call me a fool :P)
wow. this makes be feel like a FOOL. xD I should have noticed that. and yea that speed test was a little low; usually its around 14-16.
but thanks for explaining it and not calling me a noob :P that really sucks though. internet is absurdly expensive when you think about what it actually is :<
Yeah, also check average speeds and fine print, mine fluctuates WILDLY from what is advertised or promised and what I get. Really, from 3-30 is the range with "15"promised.
I actually just switched to a company called "Earthlink". I was using Time Warner as it was all I could get. Even though I was in a 2 year contract with them they would up the price a few bucks or cents. HOW CAN THEY DO THAT? I was in a contract with an agreed price for 2 years??!?!?
anyways. I guess Earthlink uses Time Warren in some way and all I had to do was call them, and my service was switched over.
Luckily for me, if my speed fluctuates it usually goes higher then 15Mbps!
