In the situation of crime, organised violence or rape or selling drugs at those kind of events it would be really useful. The flip side is all that data collected is probably definitely destined to be misused and sold to whoever etc.
Edward Snowden will be doing a talk for the festival. The sign is most likely some kind of PR trick, they will probably ask people if they noticed the sign and thought about how crazy it was etc. in conjunction with the talk.
If not this would be pretty crazy especially with the "sharing is caring" statement, and also super ironic since they will have Snowden talk, lol.
It was nice to be able to go into a store, pay with cash and not have much, or really, no personal data stored in some company's database. Well, thanks to facial recognition technology and surveillance systems --- my ability to protect my personal commerce data will be limited to as if I purchased things online soon. Yay!
So to put it in relation to this thread. There is NO reason a company/store needs facial recognition technology, except for "data collection." AKA - blatant data collection.
Boy, won't it be the day when retailers are able to use their surveillance systems to limit theft (and increase revenue), and use them to monetize their customers data. Wow! Talk about maximizing profits.
Every possible missed revenue opportunity is a loss on the capitalists balance sheet. Who cares if its right or wrong.
The fact that data is being created is just an aspect of technology, IMO there's no realistic expectation about it not happening.
What if your local government (or whatever looks after the place your house is) used all this as part of a blockchain and can be part of identity validation.
I'm suspicious of the situation you describe, many businesses are completely dominated by opportunistic greed ideologies, they are at best too giddy to care about anything they are doing.
The idea of lower crime, more accountability of bad person's actions etc is something I do like. Living in an urban area, I do like the idea of companies and places being able to reduce vandalism, make areas safer for people, horrible people having to be accountable for their deeds etc. I hope this is a nice side affect of the inevitable data gathering that is coming. But I have a bad feeling a bunch of lawyers will wipe the floor with it and what we have left is all the data gathering the marketing teams could ever hope for, but massive restrictions to actually put it to other use such as reducing crime. I suppose another bad side-affect is living in a world where it is low crime because the 'bad' people know they can't get away with it- what happens when the system goes down? I would rather live in a society where people do right because it is right, and not because they have the feeling of a camera over their shoulder. The future will be interesting...
They always use the excuse of using data to stop criminals or "the bad guys" as they call it, like they can define it. But in reality, it's so they can figure out how they can gain more control, that Orlando shooting that happened recently, the FBI knew it was coming and did nothing about it. Same thing with 9/11, Bush Jr knew it was coming, but sat back and then went after Iraq cause it was an opportunity to have more money and the ones at power saw it as more control too. Yeah, I know that the human race is losing the concept of "character" and "growth" and I am pretty sure Social Media has a lot to do with it (not entirely, there is also bad parenting, etc.)
