EVGA GTX970 (SLI) Power Consumption?

Hello!

I currently running a single GPU in my gaming/recording rig. I have joked/considered purchasing another GTX970 and throwing it (not literally) into this PC.

The PC currently has a 750W, Bronze certified, Corsair PSU in it. Would that be enough to run two 970's or do I need/is it recommended, to upgrade my PSU? My searches have not resulted in anything but a single card requiring a 500W PSU or greater.

The build that I am operating is:

Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 3 socket LGA1150 (Mobo)

Intel i7 4770 @3.4GHz socket LGA1150 (CPU)

16GB (2x8GB) Kingston HyperX Fury (Black) 1600MHz (RAM)

(1) 4GB(not really because it is a 970) EVGA GeForce GTX970 ACX 2.0 (non-superclocked model) (GPU)

128GB ADATA XPG SX900 (SSD/OS Drive)
1TB Seagate ST91000640NS (Games Drive)
1TB Seagate ST1000DM003 (Storage)

Corsair CX750M 750W (PSU)

I built this rig to accommodate the upgrade from a Nvidia GeForce GTX645 1GB card to a single GTX970, having no idea that I would be throwing a second GTX970 in it almost a year later.

Thanks in advance for any assistance with this matter (I am not calling it an issue because I don't even have the second card yet. I'm searching to see if I can even power it with my PC's power availability before I even buy the card).

Thanks!

CX is ropey, Caps are known to pop at high load. Sell the 970 and buy an R9 Fury (or better) instead. A single card wont kill the PSU, 2 might.
No SLI problems either..

The PSU overloading is the main reason I have brought this question to the table. I intend to stay with Nvidia cards, as that is what I have used in previous builds.

I have never operated an AMD card, and at the current time, with this being the only operational PC that I have, I am not willing to take a chance on a different GPU.

I am aware of the chance for SLI issues, and I am prepared to deal with them when they arise.

Thank you for the response!

If you can spare the cash a 980ti would be a better and safer option. How much more expensive would another 970 vs selling it and getting a 980ti be for you?

750w SHOULD be fine but not worth the risk with a CX.

even with selling the 970 I have currently, it would still be more expensive to purchase a 980ti than another 970.

My first option was getting a 980, but after pricing them, my decision changed.

Ok.

I have recently been concerned with the performance of the CX I have so will be swapping it out for maybe something more powerful or maybe equal in power.

Any suggestions?

I went with the CX at the time that I built this PC because it was the size I needed and was really all I could afford. I also know that Corsair's quality is pretty good. It was better than what I was looking at when shopping for this PSU.

Ive had my corsair TX850v2 for ages now so haven't looked at PSU's for a long time.. Check out some reviews online.

The Fury (non X) is a cheaper option (at least it will be once settled) and unless you run some software that prefers nvidia I dont quite see the problem with AMD.

I personally own a 970 and my next card will be nvidia due to using a CRT monitor which AMD don't support.

And that is another reason for me keeping the 970.

One of my games, one that I play quite often, is optimized for Nvidia cards.

there is a possibility of a price drop on the higher end nv gpu's, but also the price of a new PSU would only add to the money spent.
Is the price of a new decent PSU + 970 still better than selling the 970 and buying a ti?

Yes it is.

In that case look for a decent 750+w PSU

This one looks nice although theres bound to be newer better stuff around, Good luck.

That is the PSU that I have been looking into to replace my current one.

I have also been looking at the Corsair RM850

yes, also good.

The RM850 is also cheaper than the gold rated EVGA 850W PSU

can you give me a rundown of your numbers on the psu/970 vs ti?

Where I am it doesn't compute but we tend to get screwed on prices in the UK.

RM850 £126.68
GTX970 £262.98 = £389

ebay 970 £250 - 10% so £225
980ti £526.07 - £225 = £301

Certainly!

139.99 USD for the RM850

141.98 USD for the EVGA 850 G2

or the crazy option

170.95 USD for the EVGA 1000 G2 PSU

and then the GPU

329.99 USD for the GTX 970

They are all Amazon links because that is what I had bookmarked. I usually just use Amazon to price parts and what not. Most of the time I do not buy from them, though exceptions can be made.

You cant get $230 for your 970?

980ti is $700?

sadly no

and the 980ti is like $680

Fair enough so.

If you treat your current PSU with kid gloves you might get away with not needing a new one.
