End of Linux

I ran into a fella today who said something very interesting and wanted to share it with everyone here. He said that Linux is going to be obsolete and Wlindows 10 is where "it's all going."

And think about it -- Powershell is like a bash substitute. Plus this guy mentioned that Windows is getting a repository. Basically, with the new leadership at Microsoft, things with Windows is going to very different and it is going to become a very powerful OS.

Anyways, this was a knowledgeable guy who's involved in CPU architecture. After talking to him for awhile it was apparent that he was legit.

As someone who uses Linux to learn and become a serious computer professional, this makes me feel like maybe learning Windows might be a better use of time.

Thoughts???

Is it free software/open source? Oh no... So no Linux and free software is going nowhere.

I know your summarising your conversation but I fail to see anything in what you said that would make Linux obsolete. BSD has a powerful shell and repo but it and Linux still exist.

Consider as well Microsofts position is to make as much money as possible there goal seems to be to do this through software as a service. Windows 10 seems to be more linked to online services than any other. No doubt it will do well but that by no means will see the end of Linux. I just wish the EU would do somthing about there monopoly on pre installed desktops.

This seems like one of those cases, which prove that knowing something in one computer related area does not transfer to understanding in others. It seems that your "smart friend" has no clue.

It's cute that you think bash is source of Linux dominance in server market, but it is not. The real reasons are the security architecture, multitude of chain-able and simple utilities, ability to assemble the system only from necessary parts and the community knowledge base.

Linux isn't going anywhere.

If this is serious and not just epic trolling, then no.

There is no company called Linux the way there is ones called Microsoft and Apple. The development is largely done by average people in spare time, there is no one to fire. People can always fork code and just keep on developing how they like. Linux with that freedom is never going away.

Windows only really has a foot-hold in one market: Enterprise desktops/laptops and subsequently, the servers needed to manage them. Even if Windows 100% took over that market (hah, it won't), Linux is in EVERYTHING. Linux is not going away anytime soon.

Lots of big companies such as Amazon, Google, HP, and Canonical (duh) have full-time employees who work on Linux and related projects.

Of course but those are business level environments. I mean with enthusiast and home use.

Linux will never be obsolete it's fucking linux for crying out loud, it's the operating system with a flavor for everyone and you can do whatever you want with it Windows is just Windows and you're stuck with it.

The same still applies. Lots of large companies contribute to several areas of not only Linux but many free software projects that are not just for enterprise but for home use too.

Yeah, but they actually contribute more to open source than people coding in their free time. I'm glad both exist, but the reason Linux development progresses as quick as it does is not because of the home coders.

I k ow, I am just saying that there is no plug to pull so to speak. If microsoft somehow magically went under tomorrow all support and future development would be gone for windows. But with Linux there is no ultimate stop as people can just carry on and start over.

hold a cotton picking minute.

that is all.

lol. cause this thread is so serious.

Lol, just no.

You're missing the point of linux.

The desktop is just a tiny portion of what linux is actually used for.

How is that by windows copying concepts from Linux and MAC OS make them obsolete. It only makes windows not being anachronistic any more. How does windows finally following the curve translates to : Windows is where all things are going..This argument makes no sense.

This ¨smart¨ guy does not understand anything about free software or the technological field. He is just a fanboy. Learn what you need to learn for the field you will work with. Being proficient in both OSs is even better. Depending on the field either OS can be useful and on either you can use free software which will make your life as a professional easier in the long run. Do no listen to such bullshit arguments. Linux is not going anywhere because it is created to fill a void that close source environments cannot.

The end of linux right now would be the end of the world as we know it, that's all...

On the other side of the equation, the end of windows would be a minor inconvenience before November 15th, and a fait divers after November 15th 2015...

Windows and GNU/Linux are not the same product, comparing them is like comparing apples and cabbages, the only kind of comparison that makes sense is the comparison that is not related to any specific application or purpose or use. There are just so many things that can't be done with anything else than linux for the moment, things like strategic nuclear arsenal control, energy production management, control units for means of transportation, medical devices, telecommunications servers, etc... there aren't many essential things that are not entirely dependent on linux. Windows is nothing like that, it's a comfort product, a luxury good, not necessary but convenient in some respects and very well marketed. If proprietary software and hardware consoles like Windows/XBox/PS4/... would cease to exist right now, some people would have to spend a couple of days learning the essentials that they should have learned to start out with, and then things would continue as per usual. If linux would cease to exist right now, the whole world would experience an apocalyptic cataclysm, with no strategic arsenals, no energy, no food, no medical care, no transportation, no banking, no water distribution, etc... and it would take years to build everything up again by lack of available alternative.

Nah, if you yanked Windows from the world overnight it would have very serious economic impacts.

Why November 15th?

Here i was thinking that Linux just became even more important to me with win 10 coming ?

Microsoft is actually a larger contributor to the Linux kernel than Canonical is ... Wrap your head around that.

That is a bit one sided, no?

Tons of organisations and therefore many mission critical systems use Windows (i.e. banking systems and ATMs) and losing them would certainly be a bit more than an "inconvenience".
