Encrypted Thumb Drive Software Options

So, I have started setting up keepass on my thumb drive, I only use two PC's. One at work and the other at home. On that thumb drive I also have some other misc files that come in handy while on the go. I want to encrypt the drive in case I lose it or drop it. Does anybody know of some solid software options do this? (preferably open source). Right now windows is my main OS but I would feel better if the software was usable on linux as well. I will have admin access on all the machines I use it with so that wouldn't be an issue.

So far the option I have found is windows bitlocker, which only works in windows and is not open source.

Anybody have recommendations?

You could use VeraCrypt: https://veracrypt.codeplex.com/

It is the spiritual successor of TrueCrypt and OpenSrc, but to be honest, I haven't tried it yet...

Looking through the documentation now it might work.

Well, I've got it up and running. I wish I could run the software without needing it installed on the machine.

Maybe I'll partition the drive from 64gigs to 63gig and 1gig. Put the software on the 1 gig and encrypt the rest.

Hmmm strokes beard

I use VeraCrypt everyday and have a couple thumb drives encrypted. I'd like to know what that beard stroking end up with, keep us updated :D

Have a look at this @Ethereal https://veracrypt.codeplex.com/wikipage?title=Portable%20Mode

Doing a data dump off my drive then I'm gonna play around with that link. My first idea won't work because windows won't recognize a thumb drive with two partitions at the same time.

Hmm, come to think of it, then you'd just make a file container and not a partition.

E: a guide on how to make it. The interesting bit is that you specify a size for the container, and if I remember correctly veracrypt fills the remainder of the file with garbage so that noone will know from looking at the encrypted mess if the container is full or not. Which they would otherwise be able to. https://veracrypt.codeplex.com/wikipage?title=Beginner%27s%20Tutorial

Currently decrypting to test the new method.

Note to self, before starting the decrypting process, make sure you are plugged into a usb 3 port... gg the next hour of my life.

Haha, damn, you might be better off just starting over if it's possible :) It's getting really late here, so I'll head on over to the bed in a minute. Looking forward to hearing about how it went!

TL;DR

I created a traveler disk, it's in the tools options. It just creates a directory where the veracrypt application sits, it's not encrypted but must be run with admin privileges. After you make that you just go through the process of creating an encrypted folder, then viola you have a safe way to carry files. I'm keeping a copy of my password manager in there. The data base of which is also encrypted, so I have double encryption on that.

It's kind of the same thing I'm using it for. Of course I do not have it as a traveler disk, just have it installed, but this is definitely something I'll look into. I have some thumb drives at my parent's house and other places as a backup with essential files.

I think it will be helpful for keeping my passwords with me at all times but still secure. I don't have to worry about changing the database on all the machines I use, just the one I carry and a couple backups.

Whilst installing, the wizard gave me a prompt to either install or extract, so it does support portability.
