i personally use thunderbird for the past 7 years already and it works fine.
The only thing i notice with imap and certain web mail services is that the synchronization,
can be a little bit laggy sometimes.
But other than that it generally works fine.

Evolution is another popular mail client that works pretty well.

+1 for Betterbird. It really is just better.

Sure, manually doing updates on my MacBook is a pain, but thatā€™s a worthwhile price to pay, for me.

I donā€™t think I would have thought to ask them if they liked it.

postfix - is configured connecting to the pm bridge like a client. It runs on the same (VM) where the bridge is. So mailing applications connect to postfix, technically.

It has been a long time since I configured this so Iā€™ll imagine there was a reason, most likely that the bridge didnā€™t like being connected to from anywhere but localhost.

but e.g. main.cf:

relayhost = [localhost]:1025 # your protonmail bridge smtp port

& sasl_passwd contains the connection credentials to the bridge.

postfix can then be configured to authorise how you like, but in my case sufficient for anon on those hosts specified by mynetworks = as Iā€™m happy with the security otherwise, that only pfsense can spam, only me at 3am with VPNā€™s hopping up and down.

I had been using Thunderbird since the project started. Although with all of the woke BS going on in the Mozilla Foundation Iā€™ve switched over to Betterbird.

(I wonder if there will be an email-offshoot of Ladybird Browser when that has a regular release)

Also thunderbird hereā€¦ Mainly came about as a way to use the same interface on Linux and Windows during the time I was using Windows at home and Linux at work (yeah, backwards from most I suspect).

I find it works well 99% of the time. Thereā€™s a quirk I see sometimes with IMAP where if you delete a message then immediately expunge the folder, it will say itā€™s busy, but usually do it anyway. Itā€™s not annoying enough to bother filing a big report. Just click OK and get on with your dayā€¦ It also only happens if youā€™re a weirdo like me who prefers to mark messages deleted instead of moving them to the trash folder.

If anyone is wanting to compare quirks vs mail server software, we use Dovecot 2.3 at home and work.
