ECC errors from unfilled slots

I have an Asus RS500A-E12-RS12U with an EPYC 9654. This is the first time I have built with this chassis.
If I put memory (64gb sticks) in slots A2, B2, C2, G2, H2, I2 the machine looks solid. Runs without problems.
I normally run with 1/2 TB so if I put 2 more sticks in E2, K2 (the manual recommendation) I get ECC errors for slot I1 (no stick in that).
I tried them in slots D2, J2 and got errors in slot D1. So tried in F2,L2 and got errors in slot F1. So always an empty slot. Machine will hang within a few hours.
In peoples experience is this likely to be a problem with the memory sticks (I tested them with the windows tests), the motherboard or maybe the processor? I am going to be trying a few other things to narrow this down but testing is a pain what it takes so long to boot if you change the memory.
Thanks.

I looked it up and verified you have the correct memory configs

Fully updated BIOS?
All exactly the same DIMMs?

Bios is up to date. DIMS from the QVL (or whatever that list is called). Processor is supported by the MB.
There is a slight difference in DIMM name:
MTC40F2046S1RC48BA1
MTC40F2046S1RC48BA1 MGCC
MTC40F2046S1RC48BA1 ICGG
The first two types are in the MB working. The last one is in the ones giving me problems in the later slots. I think this extra designation is OEM memory (I see some DIMMs labeled as lenovo for example).
My current plan is to get more memory to eliminate that possibility.

I have the same problem, with the exact same hardware. Did you get to any conclusion?
thanks

I managed to duplicate this error using barely mixed DIMMs.

Since each DIMM pair is sharing memory channels, it is reporting as error in unpopulated slot

Switched to matching set and error was gone.

Epyc Genoa remains incredibly picky about RAM.

The problem with these memories and motherboard occurs randomly, usually once a quarter. In IPMI, it indicates ECC errors on two or three DIMMs, followed by a BSOD.
The reference to DIMMs in positions that are not installed must be a bug.
