Early problems in new PC build

Hello Everyone,

First off little disclaimer this is my first ever build of a PC, and I used the teksyndicate videos to help me put it together. Good videos btw. So to make a long story short I built this:

PCPartPicker part list

Now Im not very familiar with BIOS, even after watching several videos on it but managed to get through it and get windows 8.1 installed as well. So onto the problems, by default I left the BIOS alone but did see it was registering my ram speed as 1333mhz instead of 1866mhz, normal?Idk, and the latencys it auto'd to were also different from factory set for the ram dunno if this is effecting performance or not was hoping someone could explain it to me. Second early on right after windows was installed I had one of the driver installations just freeze on me for over and hour, I ended process and restarted it, however it seems to freeze on random things though not for an hour plus as it did then which made me question as to why its doing that on a brand new build. I also noticed when alt tabing that the screen goes black for 1 or 2 seconds then flashes the dvi screen and reloads, is there a way to check if this is the graphics card? Lastly I was just comparing it to my old asus laptop that overheats and it was supposed to replace, in some processes it seems to just run slow like the laptop [loading Teamspeak for example[.

TL;DR I need help determining what the problems are with the build, it's running just not the way I expected it too and not knowing I don't want to ruin it by messing with it. Basically can someone help me determine the problems then help me figure out a way to fix them?

Hello and welcome to our forum!
To answer your questions:

  • Do not trust windows to tell you what your RAM is running at. Go to the BIOS and check or use this tool.

It will tell you speed at which each individual stick is running at. If they are dual channel RAM then each stick will register as half of the total speed. For example, if it runs at 1600 MHz then the stick would say it is running at 800 MHz. This is not true for the BIOS, the actual combined speeds of the stick(s) is the one that will be displayed.

  • You need to not only install new drivers but uninstall the old ones, along with all the registry files with it. Follow the instructions, and use this tool and you shouldn't have any more problems.*

*If you still do have problems, then post about it in the hardware forum, along with complete detailed system specs, and someone should be able to help you.

Hope all this helped! :)
