E1.S on a desktop PC?

I think 15mm would be OK but 25mm is too tall

I have Optane p5801x installed in it now. They are 25mm if you include the heat sink. They would obstruct the next slot. In my case it doesn’t matter as I’m using the last slot, but it would be problematic in between two occupied slots

thx for the info

I asked this because I’m debating whether I should replace my four Hyper M.2 cards with this.

Just to be able to use more than an 8TB drive, even though I’m on PCI-E Gen3

FYI, Highpoint makes great cards if you want to increase the density of m.2. You can replace 2 hypercards with a single Highpoint 8 port card

They have them for PCIe 3.0, PCIe 4.0 and PCIe 5.0 - all x16. I own and have used all three at one point or another. They also have 4 port options for x8, via the same approach (PCIe switch)

They use a PCI switch to accomodate 8 x4 m.2 droves over a single x16 slot. They make the best of all of the cards using Broadcom PEX switching chips

I use the models without the hardware raid option. They’re a bit cheaper. But not cheap

Check out:

Rocket 1108A (PCIe 3.0)
Rocket 1608A (PCIe 5.0)

I don’t have all of the models handy, but their site is pretty comprehensive @ here

Really nice to stuff 8 m.2 in one slot. They also have an E1.S 8 port card (double slot) but it can only fit 4 of the thicker E1.S (like 5801x). I have not tried this card, it’s really, really expensive and not that beneficial when only using 4 cards - you’re paying extra for a PCIe switch that won’t be needed

In theory anything with PCIe switching introduces latency, but I believe it’s negligible
