E-Reader/E-Ink Device Recommendations

I am looking for a new E-Reader with preferably an E-Ink screen. I currently have a Kindle Paperwhite from a few years back but with Amazons changes over time I am wanting to move away from it. I have copies of all of my books and tend to get them from Humble Bundle and The Internet Archive. I prefer to have a more open device but as long as I can drag and drop epub, pdf, and mobi. I do not have a limit on budget as this will be a device I use all the time.

PocketBook has been nice, it doesn’t take you hostage the way Amazon does

I’ve had great experiences with Kobo and PocketBook, albeit both have had KOReader installed.

The one I have now is a PocketBook Verse Pro and it reads all my epubs, holds a charge forever and has USB-C which is the main reason I paid more for it over their older model, whose name eludes me.
It’s not particularly expensive but by no means the cheapest one. If you need a more pimped out one they make them with bigger screens and in color.

I’m on my second kobo, recently upgraded to the libra colour from a libra 2 and I don’t have any complaints. Some of the newer ones are repairable, and they occasionally have refurbished readers for sale but they tend to go pretty quickly. If you’re wanting more open, you can install KOReader and add a bit more functionality

You can upload epubs to it directly, and I’ve been using Calibre to pull the files to my local device and add them to my self-hosted ebook library.

One note: They struggle with ebooks that have <code> blocks, something to do with the xhtml rendering. Not sure if other readers have this problem.

What ebook library do you use?

I have PocketBook 629 Verse and so far I’m quite happy with it, usable completely offline so no risk of my books just disapearing. I like how small it is, can bring it around everywhere.
EPUB and PDF work fine, did not test MOBI.

Right now I’m using Calibre-web running on my home server

Thanks for your replies! I purchased a Kobo Elissa 2E. While I am waiting on it to arrive I am going to setup Calibre on my laptop as I currently don’t use anything other than some folders on my NAS for Library Management. It is a task that is long over due. I will provide an update after it arrives.
