If I paired two Xeon E5462 with a gtx 960 would they be a good pair for gaming?
I have no clue if you're trolling or just being serious, but those are workstation CPUs and horribly outdated. As for the gaming, One will be fine. (I think so anyways) 2.8GHz is pretty low and the 960 is a fairly good GPU. it's a 1080p card.
lol. I'm not trolling it's just that I can get two with a motherboard at a yard sale for next to nothing and I wanted to know if it's even worth bothering.
edit: and I think they might turbo to 3.4ghz when I'm not using a lot of cores.
yeah it's worth it. one would be fine for gaming. if anything i would use those for a small server if given the opportunity instead of a gaming machine. a dual socket quad-core would make a neat server.
That's a good Idea. I will see what else I can find! Thanks for the help.
Not particularly good for gameing due to low core speeds but if you can get them for a song thay will work
welp. It turns out that the board came from a mac pro. What can I do with it? Do I install os x and boot windows and linux beside it? Can I?
You can probably install Linux on it. but the better question is, is it a full system or just the motherboard and the two quad core chips?
He has a mac pro case but it's just the board, heatsinks and chips.
eh, if you do get it, install a hard drive and see if you can run linux on it. i have no clue if the Mac Pro even has a BiOS in all honesty.
I don't know if you'll be able to install Windows or Linux without going through an existing OSX install. Anyway I'd try booting with a bootable USB drive connected while holding alt(option in Mac-speak) and see if you get a boot menu on the white Apple screen. At least that's how my MacBook Pro works. Some quick Googleing should tell you how to boot from a USB drive. If you need OSX to get going the latest version can be downloaded from the Mac App Store on any Mac assuming the board is compatible with the latest version.
