I have 3 monitors, but sadly, I cannot use them to do to my 2 dvi ports on my video cards, and my third monitor is VGA, I also have 2 video cards (290x's) So I bought a dvi to vga adapter, and when I plugged it in my second video card, but it wasn't turning on. I need advice on how to change my second video card's settings so I can use both cards for displays, please help.
I run three monitors on 1 R9 290x dvi, DVI and HDMIfor outputs. they should all be on 1 card.
Except for I dont have enough ports. :/
so there's no setting for me being able to use both video cards for video output? I mean, that's an option, but i'm trying not to spend money
Okay so, in order for the second card to be used as display output, crossfire needs to be turned off, if that's what you're trying to do.
Turning crossfire off means the cards work separate instead of together. This is generally not recommended for performance.
If you're running the 290x, you should have 2DVI, 1 HDMI, and one display port, right?
You should be able to run it all on the first card that does display output. So, everything should only be connected to one card. Unless the cable/screen is bad, there shouldn't be much reason it doesn't work.
Alternatively, I would suggest testing the cable on a different working screen. Also, make sure you have the monitors set up to 'extend' or whatever. Windows key + p is the easiest way to do it.
Ok. So here's the skinny you need to use 2 dvi ports and the display port or 1 Dvi port the hdmi port and the display port.
Now for the way to plug them in. Get a Dvi to vga adapter for the VGA monitor. Use the dvi port for one of the other displays then get either a display port to dvi adaptor ( or display port to hdmi if you have hdmi support on one of the monitors) but bottom line is you have to use the display port if you want to use all 3 monitors.

I have one of those dvi male to display port male adapters, but it didn't work, one sec let me try it one more time.

I'm looking at this for my vga monitor. http://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Active-Adapter-Support/dp/B008O7RH5C I'm currently running a usb to vga, I would be more fine with it, if it wasn't for the software freezing up after I play a game, because I prefer to have my temps, ram usage, and cpu usage on that screen.
You would be better served by a DVI to VGA adaptor that plugs into the graphics card. They cost about $10 and can be purchased at Best Buy or radio shack if you have one still open in your area.

Almost every video card in history that has DVI ports has been shipped from the factory with a DVI-VGA adapter, might not be common now a days but I know I have a bunch of them in my spare parts box, if you don't have one that came with your card (s) and your local BB doesn't stock the one above maybe a friend has one they will give you, loan you, or sell you cheap.
That one converts dvi-i, Mine is Dvi-d, Also I bought my video cards second hand, so the majority of the adapters and extra parts,( 6-pin to 8pin adapters, video adapters, etc..) did not come with it.
Little bit more expensive but will do the job
Incase any of you did not notice (suggesting the DVI to VGA) is the fact he is using AMD 290x's. Which do not support native VGA support over the DVI-I. Any adapter you are going to require will need to be an ACTIVE adapter. Not a passive one.
Startech.com do some very cheap Active DisplayPort to VGA, which I found works brilliantly for the purposes.
