I have an HIS 7870, my display setting go from a dvi to vga connector, to a vga splitter, then to the two monitors. One monitor is a 22in Vizio 1650x1050 i believe and the pther is my new asus 1920x1080p. when i plug both in it show up on bothe monitors but changwes the name in the disply settings to Generic PnP monitor which is obviously wrong. any help? if you need to no more please let me know id love to use both monitors.
I'm no expert, but I doubt using a VGA splitter is what you want to do here. Adding to that, a passive VGA splitter will only split the signal, so you get the same output on both monitors. It's like cloning your monitors, which might be useful for some scenarios, but not when your resolutions differ. Furthermore, VGA is getting quite old. Don't use it unless you have to, as it degrades image quality.
It appears your GPU has 1xDVI, 1xHDMI and 2xMini-DP outputs. You say that your Asus monitor is new, so it should at the very least have a DVI input and maybe even HDMI and Mini-DP.
Here's how I'd do it, if your Vizio screen only has a VGA input: Connect your Asus monitor with HDMI (use a HDMI to DVI connector if it doesn't have HDMI) and use the DVI to VGA connector with your second screen. If none of your monitors have anything better than VGA, you should kill them with fire immediately. Or just use your DVI -> VGA connector on one monitor and a HDMI -> VGA on the other.
thanks man all is well now! just set the vizio to vga since thats all it does its like 6 years old now and my new 1080p asus on HD very happy now haha thanks man youre a saint!
