Driver issues with Quadro FX 3800

I’m trying to repurpose an old gaming rig (Debian 9/Proxmox, Z77 mobo, Xeon E3-1230 v1) as a ZFS/Proxmox server. When I replaced the old 3570K with the Xeon, I lost the iGPU so I’m trying to make do with an old Quadro FX 3800 I had lying around. Nouveau did not like it at all, so I installed the old legacy 340.xx driver. Now I have video on my monitor (Acer XF270H-B), but the maximum resolution XFCE can hit is 1280x720 and I can’t get it to fill the whole screen. GNOME instantly crashes when I try to load it.

Any hints?

Never mind, got tired of trying to fight it. An RX 580 Just Worked™.

Amd plug and play is nice.
