Downgrading Windows 10. Windows 8 vs Windows 7

Hi there

I just can't take Windoof 10 any more. My 2. GPU is useless and all the data Microsoft is collecting worrys me. Now I want to downgrade.

Witch Windows should I use. Windows 7 or Windows 8.1

Witch is better in performance.

Does it matter? All three of them collect data. If that's a main concern, switch to Linux.

They've always collected your data. Now they're just being nice enough to let you know.

Yeah but Linux dose not support all games like Battlefield, Skyrim or Witcher.

I will stay on Windows for now.

This will remove most of your windows gripes: http://pxc-coding.com/portfolio/donotspy10/
Just dont install the other 3rd party apps during install.
Works well. Easier than doing it all manually for bulk machines.

Thank you for saying this! Also give Windows 10 time to adjust for multi-GPU setups. We aren't even a month into release. This is normal.

Just did a quick google on donotspy 10.

Might be worth treading carefully.

hence

custom install, and click no to the other apps/toolbars.

Wow thanks alot bro you the man!!!

All online services you use collect data.
No matter which OS you use.

Now they also have access to your PRIVATE folders. That's pushing it too far.

But that is good, isn't it???? SAID NOONE EVER!!!! ;O)

I can't comment evidently on which is faster but as an assumption based on release and technology offered, Windows 10 [and 8.1] are likely the fastest with 7 in last place. Boot times would be faster in the later OS's as well.

In terms of security and what's going on, you're going to have a better experience with Windows 7. Collecting data in the Windows 7 era was not a focal point of Microsoft, in a marketing sense, like it is in 8.1/10.

I really like 8.1's snappiness--10's severe privacy concerns shows me enough to turn me away from using it, despite all attempts at "securing" the OS. In fact, I'm on the latest version of Mint right now with my VPN on when I don't need to game. Even if part of my library of 196 games is offered on Linux, I'd rather just use Windows to do it, so I totally get where you're coming from.

I would go with the OS that suits your needs the most. If it's just gaming, then stick with 7 until the support dies in 2020 and move on from there. We'll likely see a better gaming experience in Linux by then for you to decide. If you're good with Linux, tinker around with VGA passthrough--I have a 6600k and an R9 390 coming to me in the next week or so, so I may give it a whirl alongside my 280x for the host.

They backported the telemetry update to 7/8 just the same as it's in 10. They're not really doing anything different than what they've been doing for a long time, the only thing is that now they fired all the people that were really good at hiding it.

Also, what GPU setup are you running, and what exactly is the issue?

I was a little late to the game on this one, but DX 12.1 is exclusive to Windows 10...hurray for PC gaming.

I switched to linux...But im a leper.

Well yeah. windows 10 is a completely different OS and Direct X 12 has to be exclusive to it. I feel like you are butt hurt over nothing. Windows 7 is just old, it is moving into legacy status. That's what happens. MS is not obligated to make Direct X 12 work. Hell a friend of mine's fiance is in management with 12. Maybe I'll go ask them about it, I bet the answer will be, because 7 is old, this stuff is legacy. Just get over it.

In my use windows 7 is stupidly slow compared to 8. A lot of people are going to jump down my throat but windows 7 should not be recommended anymore. When it was Vista or 7 as choices then it was fair to say 7 was better for more than the reason of speed.

However downgrading to another version of windows will not save anyone from the spying. The updates are getting pushed back and in a year windows 8 and 7 are going to be gone anyways.

As King_of_Old_School pointed out

Which means this isn't true:

because being granular about which updates to accept means don't accept non-security related updates. So no telemetry back-port unless you're the type of person who always goes next->next->express in everything you install always

If that's the case. Go with OS/X. Apple systems are made for people who like doing that.

OEMs will not be shipping PCs with earlier versions next year but that's completely different than "being gone." Win Vista is still supported until 2017, 7 is supported until 2020. Win 8/8.1 are what? 2022-2023-ish? Technically you can still get security updates for WinXP with a registry hack until ~2019.

There's something wrong with your config. Win7 vs 8 are in the same ballpark when it comes to performance. Switching to a Linux distro won't make your hardware faster.

Or Classic Shell

i would say windows 8 unfortunately despite preferring 7, as windows will drop support for 7 very quickly I suspect
