So Im pretty sure I already know the answer but before I totally admit defeat I wanted to see if anyone was running an AMD 6970 or some other 6XXX series card to see how Doom faired on their system. I found out after some long hours of messing around that Radeon Crimson Software is now the replacement for the old Catalyst suite.
With that said I tried Crimson 16.2.1 which seems to be the last version that supports the 6XXX series, anything after that doesnt install any video drivers for my card.
The game runs sooooo poorly even on low settings, I know the card is 6 years old at this point but it still kicks @$$ with everything but Doom.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Specs:
16GB DDR3
i7 950
120GB SSD
AMD HD6970 2GB
Crimson Software Suite: 16.2.1
Driver Version: 16.301.1900
I even made custom image for this game, at least you can view something remotely cool while you listen to my crap.
Minimum Requirements
Core i5-2400 3.1GHz FX-8320
GeForce GTX 670 Radeon HD 7870
I know I saw, I was just curious if anyone got away with a 6 series card
i7-950 is equal to or in some cases better than the i5-2400, and the 7870 was the direct performance replacement of the 6970. The system specs are up to par, just driver issues.

I've not given Doom a try (that price, yikes) but I know some people were giving it a go with 2009-2011 hardware and finding it exceptionally well optimized. This may be the first game to cement the VLIW based GPUs as "legacy" however, and you may want to look into a newer card if you plan to enjoy these games.
Right now, a 6970 and 7870 are almost exactly the same price on eBay. You can practically trade one for the other and instantly get the game to be playable.

you should be able to on the lowest of low settings... It will be uglyer than me, but what the hell, you should be able to maintain some 30fps on the lowest settings...
override tessellation to 4-8x and play around disabling options in control panel.
