What parts are you using for the rest of your build?
http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/HzQj thats the rest of it and yes the psu is a bit overkill but for 2$ I figured why not
For gaming go with the 7970. For editing, go with the GTX 680.
and would you go for the sapphire vapor-x or the gigabyte
I would go with the gigabyte, I have heard their customer support is better.
great well thank you very much I can finally order my parts now :D!
The Sapphire has one less DisplayPort, though its standard size rather than mini. The Gigabyte only has a single DVI port though, which could be a minor inconvenience depending on what kind of displays you have/will get. I'm not much a fan of either brand or the designs of there coolers, but I dislike the triple fan design the most. From the looks of it though the Gigabyte ships with a 100MHz higher core clock though and its $10 cheaper to boot.

I suggest this one if you can either get over the really ugly baracle on the back of the card, or if you feel like removing the backplate and taking the plastickey bit off and leaving it off. Unfortunately, since MSI has added their own power regulation bit as an additional bit of PCB behind the GPU core, you can't actually replace the backplate with an aftermarket one. However, this system does readily repair the problem that Geforce 680's usually suffer by being relatively un-overclock-able. I suppose if you were particularly handy you could actually mod a bit of plexi to fit that spot, without actually touching it, and looking a hell of a lot better than the original piece.
How does a 2GB 680 hold up at 2560x1440 though? I'd imagine it would be a tight squeeze with some titles. Anyone have any benchamarks?
It holds up just fine, if you want to try for one of the more expensive cards that isn't as readily overclockable then

Or you can just go with a Radeon 7970.
Here Sapphire goes making a really bonkers card just because they can:

Yeah, I think he was looking at the newegg selection which is currently out of stock on the 680 you linked. Anyways, its over the budget of the other 7970 GHz Edition that would probably server him better as its only going to be for gaming. The 3GBs should be plenty for a single 2560x1440. If the plan is to do eyefinity with that resolution though a crossfire of 6GB 7970s would be the way to go though.
