[DONE] Vinyl Dying a Shield Controller

Got the idea from this:

Paint came in yesterday.

What I'm dying:

I'm having trouble with that gray bit with the volume rocker on the topside of the controller. This is the underside of it:

As you can see it's got plastic melted onto the holes in it as opposed to screws. I think I'll just remelt them with a soldering iron then hot glue them back to the stand offs.

I've decided to melt the plastic nail-like things until they easier to pop off. I'll hot glue them back in place when I'm done.

Did it

Here's a test run on some beige key caps; I'll update as I do more:
One Coat

Here goes Nothing!

One Coat on the Back Panel

One coat on the Front Panel

Two Coats on the Back Panel

5th or 6th Coat on the Front [Finished]

Melting the Touchpad Standoff Thingies back on

DONE!

Is it... Sticky? I know it says dye so does it actually sink in and become part of the plastic? Or is it some layers that will go strange and gooey yellow when in contact with you hands for a while.

Nice work. Cant wait to see the finished product.

It's nothing like paint unless you cake it on to the point where it can't reach the plastic through all the dye. it acts like paint if you get it on you.

Even after like 3 coats you can still see indentations in the plastic like this:

If you get it on you and peel it off, it doesn't come off in brittle flakes. It comes as more of a grainy dust.

And I wouldn't know if it's sticky. haven't touched it before it's dried.
Once it's dried it feels like you powder coated it.

This is the front panel with the buttons sitting in it. I like the way it looks.

Only thing I'd have done if it were easier is leave the glossier plastic by the triggers black.

That looks good. Always liked white controllers.

I got an actual camera out to give people a better idea of what the texture is like.

The white holding up well?

Yes, I wouldn't say I use it heavily though. 2-3 times a week if there's a game that I want to continue playing after I go to bed.
