does mantle work on the HD 79xx series?
and does it work on the rest of the line of the HD 7xxx series ?
It works on all GCN (Graphics Core Next) Architecture Cards.
Which is anything equal or newer than the 7xxx series.
So to answer, yes all 7xxx series cards are compatible.
Yes, mantle will work on 7*** series cards. i just hope they work as good as the hopefully will on R9 series cards, I don't see why they wouldn't unless AMD tries to screw us by limiting the performance so we have to buy the newer cards to perform at its best. I don't think they will, but we should always be diligent of the possibility.
From what little i have heared... it is ment to be an open platform... so basicly it should what with any GPU regardless of make model color... etc
Perhaps you've misunderstood.
AMD intends for it to be an open platform, but, at least at first, it will only work with GCN cards, which is all 7000 series cards starting with the 7750 and up, and the new cards.
It will not work anywhere else (Nvidia cards, AMD 6000 series, etc.) without a significant amount of effort on the part of the GPU manufacturer.
But like i said... i have done Fuck all research into the whole mantle thing, so i am only stating what i have been told
Most likely Nvidia will adopt it for the 6xx/7xx series and if that is not possible they will have to implement it to the future series wich gives AMD a huge win this year. I'd hate it if they would make their own program and basically split the pc gaming industry into two and us clients beings forced to play titles bought by our graphics card manufacturer and have very poor performance on the rest of the games, sort of like physx on a mid level amd card.
Mantle is only going to run on GCN GPUs currently that is only the 7xxx series and the R7, R9 series GPUs.
I highly doubt Nvidia would adapt their GPUs, as to do so requires they change the architecture of the cards, which they will not.

But I do wonder how they will respond. If they will add another layer that allows it run on their cards. Or if they will create their own "Mantle"
Hoping that AMD will make it as open as promised... it wont matter what nVidia Thinks... hell if it is as good as AMD is promising, it may improve performance to the Intel 3000 and 4000 Graphics creating a massive boost to intel
But if nVidia respond to Mantle but creating there own private API... they will only be shooting themselves in the foot
nvidia already has their own api for features that run on their cards. will they make their own mantle? who knows? it wont matter much in the long run anyway if they do or not. game developers will just have to support both unless its an "exclusive" game. exclusive games that are really good are what is gonna make or break mantle. one thing pc games have that consoles don't are rpg. ;)
