Just made an account on Mastodon after not being on social media for awhile…does the level1 have an instance? or does anyone have any recommendation? The chat rooms I’ve found so far suck.

I used to use mastodon as often as i used twitter, which is not that much. Its pretty much as abandoned like my old twitter account.
I’m quite certain Wendell has an account on some instance (even if just for testing) because he likes his twitter much.
In my opinion Mastodon killed itself.
It seemed like a pretty good federated system until so many people started freaking out about Gab and other instances. Then they went around intentionally breaking all of the federation systems so that no one could connect to Gab. Or from Gab. Or use Mastodon clients on Gab or on instances that federated with Gab.
I even saw admins trying to block federation coming from instances that allowed federation to Gab.
Like, what, second or third order “badness?” I think most of them were trying to show off how “pure and good” they were.
At any rate, Mastodon seems to have turned into a bunch of tiny communities that are happy to only talk to themselves. More power to them I guess.

So far I’m not having much luck, but I’ll give it a few days…maybe Wendell will be my only friend on there

I was pretty into it for a while.
The first instance I was on shut down, the owner simply didn’t want to maintain it. The second instance I was on had a database crash and no backups. I am currently @[email protected], but when I quit logging in a year or two ago it was because 95% or more of the feed was just porn or bots.
It is sort of a catch-22 of social media. It is great because nobody uses it, but a social media platform that nobody uses is kind of missing something.
If it picks up again I might start using it more.
That’s what all free software advocates do.

should I look into gab?
from the main page it seems very right wing and political…Im mostly trying to find some online friends since I have no real life ones anymore
Eh. I support Gab because I support all free speech.
But, I haven’t found any big reason to be on there myself. I did go to Gab today when I made the last comment, but I didn’t find anything interesting. I think the last time I loaded Gab before that was a month ago.
