What tablet do you use for reading your comics, books, or just anything?
I'm currently in the market for an E-Reader / Nook / Small Android Tablet. Right now i currently on my Dell Venue 8 Pro, it's nice an all but i can't hold that thing for more than a half hour before my hands/arms get tired. Plus my dumbass decided to run the Windows 10 technical preview and the majority of reading apps are broken for the most part. (again my own fault)
I'm thinking of getting the Samsung Galaxy Nook 7 or the Galaxy Tab 7 4G model (they are identical in specifications but one has 4G support the other doesnt) that just came out a few months back. i don't really care for media consumption but it's nice to have. my primary purpose of looking for a smaller tablet is to read first. media consumption later. so specifciations aren't THAT important as long as its incredibly lightweight, fits in my pocket, and i can read on it. i'm all good. also if it didn't hurt my wallet. the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact which is 8 inches weighs less than these 7 inch tablets AND the nexus 7 considerably.
What do you read on? and how is the reading experience?
also if you wish to recomend me something nice please do. i also considered the nexus 7 but the lack of micro SD expansion is a absolute NO for me. i gotta have micro SD expansion..
My current tablet has a res of 1200x800 and for me it's tolerable. i don't see pixels all that much unless i keep the screen almost a centimeter towards my face..
It's fairly lightweight easy to hold and mistaken for a giant phone all the damn time. I mainly use it for textbooks (kindle editions) and keeping up on blogs, reddit among other college related things. Though I am considering getting the nexus 9 just so I could replace my laptop with it. Plus gotta love that stock android.
My only question is how in gods name do 7 inch tablets fit in your pocket? Also to tell you the truth android tablets are really similar you could pick up just about any one and get about the same experience.
Personally I find no real use for tablets beyond reading and wasting time. The original e ink kindle is my favorite and in my opinion is the easiest on your eyes for reading. I haven't looked into them recently but I think it might be the lightest option out there as well. I have a kindle fire only because it was a gift and it still works. So for strictly reading, just get a kindle e ink version (non fire).
I read on my HTC One M8 via Amazon Kindle App. It's alright. Since I have a 1080p screen, I can fit a fair amount of text on the screen as well. Plus I have a case with a kickstand, so I don't have to hold onto my device.
For a tablet that will be used primarily as an E-Reader, I'd recommend something with an OLED screen, and read against a black background. With OLED screens, such as Samsung's AMOLED in almost all their Android products, each pixel produces its own light instead of having to rely on a power sucking backlight, and black pixels aren't powered at all. So if you read against a black background, only a small portion of the screen is powered on, which can make battery life last quite a bit considering screen time is the biggest power draw on most phones and tablets. I used to read on my Note 2, which was preferable over my M8, but I don't do a lot of reading,
my pants pockets are pretty wide. the most extreme thing i was able in my front pocket comfortably was an Xbox 360 Disc Case. it was somewhat comfortable but it fit. with my tablet it fit just fine. and even better in my back pocket. even though my tablet was 8.3 inches. i'm sure a 7 inch tablet will fit fine in your back pocket unless you wear tight jeans lol.
That's the issue. i'm using it primarily for reading and slight media consumption. also i read a lot of manga besides using the nook application. and the kindle app. On my current tablet (which most of the time the apps break but they work sometimes. cause i'm running windows 10 technical preview) reading is fine. but i'm looking for something i'm used to. which is Android.
I have Asus Padfone, first gen. After I gave my Kindle to mom, I used the tablet station to read 2 out of 5 Song of Ice and Fire books and it was passable. Nowadays I use Kindle Paperwhite 2 and won't be coming back. E-ink screen is just so much better and costs next to nothing...
I've tried reading on my phones and on an iPad but I get distracted too easily and the reading experience isn't great for long-term use. Reading forums and code is actually easier in my opinion. The Kindle (not Fire), however, I found is a completely different story. The text is really nice to look at, even with prolonged use and I don't feel like I need to go look at something else part-way through. Manga or novels work perfectly well and pages turn fluidly,
I read on my phone with the Google books app. Looks good up until I smashed the glass I really enjoyed reading on it, now letters disappear into cracks...
I will say though an e-ink display are really good, the best in fact. The plain ones without the backlight I prefer.
I would love a yotafone for this. If they did a tablet that would be the best ever.
I do not have a tablet since I consider them to simply be smartphones that don't fit into a pocket, which makes them useless to me. If I needed something I can't carry without a bag, I'd take a laptop instead.
When it comes to reading books, I find smartphones to be almost as good as tablets. Screen type in that case matters more than size (for reading, IPS >>>>> OLED). Still, e-ink readers with backlight are the best for that purpose, since they strain eyes the least and have most appropriate screen size for that. For comics/manga, 10" tablet with an IPS screen is the best choice due to amount of detail and responsiveness to rotation, scrolling and turning pages. Do not get OLED ones due to the fact that you can't comfortably read them at night.
PPI for non-pentile screens stops mattering at around 250 for smartphones, around 220 for tablets.
i Have a 7" Galaxy tab 4. and a kindle for reading, reading on tablets kills my eyes, well anything with a backlight has to be dimmed right down. the white on black on this forum isnt too good for me either. damn photophobia.
You don't have the dark mode enabled on the forum? mines doesn't hurt my eyes in the slightest. everything on the forum for me is just plain black, grey and white. well text just being white
Yes you can just turn down the backlight. But I do agree IPS or e-ink are better. Just saying, I use oled and have no issue once you set them up right.
I'm currently using an Apple iPad 2. If I were you I'd avoid the iPad 2 and iPad Mini (non-retina) as they probably won't get iOS 9. Go for the iPad Mini Retina or iPad Air if you do buy one.
