Title says it all. I'd like to run a home server that I can access when I'm out of my appartment, but I'm a little afraid of the possiblitiy of a fire. Do you protect yourself against such a scenario and how?
I thought this was about disaster recovery xD
Why would their be a fire?
The only reason I can see that happening is if you put some kindling around your server like covering it in a nice flammable blanket to keep the heat in.
You go out your flat with your fridge and freezer on all the time.
Edit:
And to answer the question. Keep it ventilated, have a smoke alarm, and back up your data to somewhere outside your building.
If you have the cash install a fire suppressant gas system? That way fire is choked out without pouring water on everything!
I don't know, maybe the power supply?
Fridge, freezer, boiler, router, phone, extension cords, wall chargers.
I'm attempting to build a picture of the fire hazards that you probably have already in your house and how they also haven't burned down your home :p
You have a computer now i assume? Why hasn't that caught fire? Its not more likely to catch fire because your not in. I actually don't think ive ever heard of a modern computer catching fire.
As @AlphaCougar said, you could install a fire suppressant system. But why would you.
Say there is a risk of the power supply might catch fire, the solution is to buy a reputable brand where there's no reports of it catching fire. You've now minimised your chances of it catching fire.
I think your worrying over nothing. Your home is far more likly to burn to the ground because of a toaster in someone elses flat than a PC power supply. What you should consider is where you will backup your data in case someone else in the building burns the place down and takes your server with it.
Ok, got it. Thanks
What country do you live in? I don't like electrical outlets that have the wires pushed in vs screw terminals: http://www.handymanhowto.com/electrical-outlets-side-wire-versus-back-wire/
I've seen too many of those die by melting due to the wire working its way out over time.
Anything that could really catch fire from an outlier event (e.g. rat crawling inside the computer, making a nest, etc etc) is inside the power supply. (aside from your wiring and the outlet itself). Make sure the power supply and power cord are top quality. Make sure the outlet is wired properly.
It also pays to check outlets for appliances like washer/dryers, fridges, etc that use a fair bit of power on a regular basis during spring cleaning. Look for things like the plug or outlet being warm and that kind of thing.
Thanks Wendell, I'm from Austria (not Australia, they always confuse that).
Hopefully that goes without saying that your whole home needs to be considered when protecting it from electrical damage. European homes are generally quite good, though you still find older homes that haven't been rewired to code.
There's also the electrical grid which again is uusaly generally good but there are places where it isn't.
