I eventually see the Linux OS surpassing Windows when it becomes more user-friendly and I want to know if you see it doing the same. Why or why not ?
Hm. I see Linux gaining a bigger decent following as it has now as Distros like Ubuntu keep heading down the more user friendly route, however let's hope that PC makers will start offering Linux Distros with shipping with Laptops and PCs. Even though there is a few, there isn't many unless you're looking at Workstations then usually you can find Red Hat being offered. I think Lenovo/HP do that.
Anyhow I can see companies shifting towards Distro's like Red Hat even more for day to day computer operations, because at somepoint in their life time they're going to have to update their systems and how Windows 10 is going, it seems rather unattractive, all them XP PC's are going to have to be upgraded at somepoint! Even though a lot of animation and VFX studios use Distros like Red Hat, hense the reason thank god we have that kind of software on Linux, I'm talking more about the average joe business, like call centers, ect.
But who knows? Time will tell.
I doubt it sadly.
Linux PC desktop usage has grown steadily over the last few years, i believe it is at 2.5 % ( that's a sizeable amount of people ) Mac is at 5%. Mac doesn't support vulkan, they use Metal. There is a metal-API for vulkan but most probably won't use and I think there is licensing cost involved in getting software onto Mac.
Already we see games coming out on Linux that are not on Mac. Linux PC will be fringe for some time, perhaps always but that doest make it a failure.. look at Nintendo sales vs Sony / MS, that is still a nice platform with a solid userbase even if it doesn't lead.
Canonical are going to attract a lot of people with their phone / desktop hybrid.
FYI use Linux-PC as the nomenclature. Linux has already dominated the console space, the automotive space, the mobile space, the server space, the scientific space and the space .. err.. space. Linux-PC desktop space will need some big studios to release on Linux, it doesn't have to be opensource or free software it just has to run well and be available. Once the numbers rise that might actually happen.
SteamOS will help a lot!
I think Linux use will increase over the next 5 years
I see Linux growing in the Server and Cloud definitely. It already dominates in mobile. I see it grabbing another few more percentage points because of the developing world is teaching their students on Linux. That is were the next billion computer users are.
Overtaking Windows in the West? Nah but it will grow some though.
I dont know ? Windows is doing a really good job at killing themselves. Full release is not even stable :) Waiting on that patch that bricks millions of devices and MS bankrupts :) Forced updates yo lol..........................
I think it will grow but I think in order for it to have a really big jump in adoption stores need to start offering Linux as an option with pre-built PC's and laptops.
I also don't think the Linux isn't user-friendly argument stands anymore. My dad's laptop broke so while waiting for a replacement part I gave him my laptop running ubuntu-gnome I only needed to show him where the start menu was and away he went.
One thing I want to see is more things like raspberry PIs I think getting more things like this in schools will help the adoption rate. I know my old high school bought 50 of them for an after school engineering club they run and use them in classes.
It's growing by the day. Windows 10 helps a bit with their shitty update policy. People want to feel like they own the things they buy. Windows doesn't provide that.
Sadly no, to many issues and hurdles. Much like free beer, the year of the Linux desktop will always be tomorrow.

inevitable if microsoft keeps blindly digging deeper into their graves
I see a lot of people dual booting both linux and windows for different purposes these days which is good.
Linux in most cases has a very robust desktop environment and it has become fairly user friendly.
For gaming there is still the issue of Directx dependence but some efforts are being made to slowly move to a more open standard like Vulkan, I think game devs will have to adapt to both DX12 and Vulkan in future because of the growing linux market for gamers. And manufacturers like AMD / Nvidia need to provide software that is as capable within linux as their windows software often is.
People may consider Linux to be more attainable, Windows typically comes at a cost and so does all its applications, whereas linux is the opposite of that you can virtually get all your apps free.
Microsoft has 3 key things that enable it to have their current level of market dominance, 1 is DX and the other is the biggest XML library. These 2 technologies drive their market for 2 reasons, gaming which utilizes DX and MS Office which has rich XML features. Lastly Microsoft offers service, their customer support and widely available resources internationally and also their partnerships with other OEM PC manufacturers have enabled them to not only capture the market but hold on to it.
For linux to be considered a mainstream OS it needs consistency and a similar level of support globally as what Microsoft provides its users. But again this might come at a cost, FREE Linux means the user has to accept some compromise, a fully fledged supported linux means that the user will have to pay the cost of support. Corporate clients like HP / Lenovo etc play a role in this but Windows has presented them in the past with a cash flow business model that enables 'support' to earn income and that is why so many IT engineers working for those types of businesses have jobs.
Windows created an ecosystem financially and a marketing powerhouse, for Linux to compete with that for mainstream uptake it would take a similar effort.
In defense of Linux though they have captured the mobile market more successfully, most mobile devices are currently linux based although google might move away from android soon so we will see what happens.

Linux does not need so much of an ecosystem overhaul as much as societal levels in expectations need to change. We teach people to not tear things apart, look at stuff, research, poke buttons. No one builds anymore. What linux does is inspire building. What is the normal now is to keep your head down and shut up. Linux is a wasps nest the size of a nuclear meltdown planet wide. What needs to change is that people need to accept that there are some screws that can come out, some panels don't need to be there, then you can replace those panels with shelves! Bolt a nuclear reactor to the other side! You can do that! No one wants that.
WHY DOES NO ONE WANT THAT.
Linux needs nothing.
While what you are saying is not wrong, Windows is sadly embedded in our mainstream culture and my only point was that for linux to be more widely used it would take a commercial approach which as we all know defies the open source approach so its a difficult place for linux to be.
I would argue that linux is already bigger than OSX and gaining, but none of use care about polls enough to try and prove anything.
