Depends entirely on what you intend to do with it. A desktop is a must if you want to do any gaming, rendering ext. If you are not going to be doing anything hardware intensive, a laptop is fine.
i do gameing and minor editing
In that case, buying a desktop will be worth it, as laptops tend to have comparatively poor GPUs. You don't necessarily need to spend $1000 though, especially if you build it yourself. You could probably get what you need for $600-$700.
I tend to tell people 850 is he first "Sweet spot" for a gaming pc, below that I can build a system that can game but, it will have comprimises that i prefer not to make for a gaming rig.
for a laptop, what i tel people is, unless you got a few grand to spend, dont think your gonna get a unit thats good for gaming.
best to just buy a cheap lappy that can do what you need to do at reasonable speed, save the rest and build a real gaming desktop.....
+1
if you aren't a very avid gamer and you don't mide low framerates + lower quality graphics you'll be fine on the laptop, or try some gaming and see if you can live with the results

Went ahead and put together a build for you,in terms of gaming this system would run games pretty well, editing too.
If you plan on using Adobe creative suite, you can switch the 7870 XT for an Nvidia for the CUDA cores.
