Kind of a noob question...
Hopefully soon i will be putting a Asus Gtx 970 strix in my rig, do i have to remove old drivers, take old card out put new card in, then reinstall drivers? and any other gpu advice would be much appreciated
current spec's
- Intel Core i7 3770 @ 3.40GHz
- Asus Nvidia GeForce GTX 660ti GPU
- Asus P8Z77-V lx Motherboard
- G Skill 8.00 GB RAM
- Corsair RM 750 Gold Rated PSU
- Western Digital Black 1TB 7200rpm HHD
- Samsung 840 Evo (250gb) Boot SSD
- Cooler master Scout 2 case
i might be wrong on this, but i think Nvidia's drivers are universal, since i get the exact same updates on both my desktop and laptop (running a GT640 and a GT540m)
It would probably work to just put the new card in, but you're better off uninstalling the driver first and then installing the new one. It's really not that much hassle and it saves you from potentially having problems later.
He could just rerun/repair/update the driver upon installation of the new card. The new Geforce drivers are pretty smart and should do anything necessary for you. Google a guild to remove old junk files and old installers taking up space on the hard drive. Consider taking a look at your registry.
I can guarantee you the guys who run review websites and swap out cards several times a day aren't thinking too much about their drivers other than having the most up to date one installed as both AMD and nVidia drivers are universal to a degree.
