Do APU's need graphics drivers?

Title says it all really. I thinking of doing an AMD build with linux and wondering if I have to bother with installing graphics drivers when using an APU (excluding the open source drivers)?

if you want access to GPU part then yes; but cpu wise you don't.

For Linux the open source drivers are built into the Kernel so if you don't plan on doing any heavy gaming you should be fine. If you do plan on gaming, then you will want the extra performance of the proprietary drivers.

The best open source performance will come with Kernel 4.0. Since it is an APU it can do HSA which a lot of Linux graphics software supports.

Did you already have an idea for your build? I was planning on doing a GPUless ITX system with an APU pretty soon

Oh, ok. Thanks.
