Diversity in Video Games: A serious topic coming up a lot these days

Today Kotaku posted a very well written article about diversity in video games:

I enjoyed reading it because diversity is something that should be discussed freely when it comes to video games. Now this does not mean I agree with adding diversity for the sack of adding it. Rather I agree with having diversity in games where it makes sense: see Bioware games for how to do diversity.

So what do you guys think about this topic or the article?

By bioware I hope you don't mean dragon age...

I agree adding in diversity is fine as long as its not just a cash in on x group in an attempt to make money.  Just do it right and not like it something meant to sell a game on and its fine.

Who cares. It's up to the developers to make their own characters however they see fit.

The article is informative, but doesn't seem to get to any real conclusions. Honestly, I'm not sure there was ever that much trouble anyway. Lots of games give you full character customization. There's quite a few games which allow gay relationships. A forced gay relationship (of the non-lesbian variety) is something that doesn't come to mind, now that would be something interesting. And maybe make it interracial, just to spice things up.

How about a rich middle-eastern oil baron in his late forties, stripped of his estate and title fights against all odds and social stigma to win the heart of a 20-something French exchange student of Asian descent... Who is married to a Russian girl with Mafia connections... Heads would blow!
