So I was doing some reading online about different video cables for monitors. One thing I came across is DisplayPort 1.2a. The difference I found with 1.2 vs 1.2a is that 1.2a supports adaptive sync and is needed for free sync monitors. So why can't I find any 1.2a cables online to buy if they are in need for freesync monitors? The only thing I could really find is adapters that go from 1.2a to HDMI, dvi or vga. Shouldn't this cable be in more demand and in better availability??
you can use any display port cable you want, they are all the same. the actual Display port 1.2a is just a port on adaptive-sync based monitors.
when it comes to these cables you have to understand, the cables don't change, the bandwidth does. you can use a display port cable from 2 or 3 years ago it will work with a display port 1.2a port.
I see. I guess the way I read it, was that is if you have a freesync monitor with a 1.2a output you needed a 1.2a cable to be able to take advantage of the adaptive sync capabilities cause 1.2 doesn't support freesync and 1.2a does. Or am I understanding this wrong?
Okay so one thing I found is any DP 1.2 cable built after Janruary 2015 should have the adaptive sync capabilities built in. Anyone else confirm what I'm yammering about?

A cable is a just a couple metal wires bundled together. What makes an HDMI Displayport and DVI different is the ends on either side and the amount of wires inside. There is no chip controller or anything in a cable, It's just metal transferring a signal.
What defines 1.0, 1.1, 1.2 or 1.2a within the DIsplayport standard is the controller/chips on either end.

if i had to give you an analogy to explain this.
The cables are bridges. And the GPU and monitor are just the places you want to connect.. So they can be easily accessable.
A Display Port cable from 5 years or 7 years ago is no different than a display port cable today.. The only difference is of course is that one is much newer than the other.
However the places (The GPU and the Monitor) change but the bridges (The Cables) don't. They are just bridges or in this case, they are just cables.
Nothing more nothing less, the Cables dont provide the monitor with the bandwith the actual ports do. And all the cable does is lets the bandwidth go from one place to another.

However cables are much more than a wire connecting an interface. The standard often will specify the number of twists per inch, the minimum gauge of wire, the thickness of the insulation, the conductance of the outer insulation, the maximum length of the cable & even the maximum distance the wire can be untwisted as it enters the plug. All in order to reduce crosstalk, internal capacitance & outside interference.
An example you may have handy is Network Cables. Cat 6 is much stiffer & has much higher tolerances than Cat 5. Even though you can plug a long Cat5 cable into a 10Gb switch, It will not function correctly at that speed, causing your whole network will step down.
Similarly many standards have used the same plug but left many of the pins unconnected. As the standard has evolved some of those pins were defined in the new standard & were expected to be connected. Hence a cable that was complaint with the earlier standard is not compliant with a later release.
Hence it is a more than reasonable for GnomishViking to check if the new standard included a change to the wiring or pinouts of the cable.
the snake oil Displayport cables are the best ones.... it'll give you a better gaming experience :P
