Disk2vhd no worky

Hello all,

I’m using Microsoft’s Disk2vhd tool to create an image of my Windows 11 boot drive. However no matter what options I use to create the VHD, when I try and boot from it using Virtual box I just get put into an EFI shell.

Maybe Disk2vhd isn’t the best option for what I’m trying to do I’m not sure. I’m looking to try Linux Mint as my daily driver OS but have my current Windows install virtualised.

I have experience in creating virtual machines from scratch but never using an image of a physical disk.

Any help would be appreciated

Antony

Could be any number of things.

Do you have to use VirtualBox? Would you be willing to entertain the idea of Qemu/KVM?
With Qemu/KVM, it’s far more likely myself and others here at L1T would be able to help you find and fix your problem.

Do you still have the original storage device containing Windows? If so, do you any have means to boot it up?

I have a few possible theories:

  1. Windows 11 wants TPM and your virtualization config isn’t setup to emulate it right.

  2. Disk image is corrupt, or is otherwise not containing Windows’ EFI partition.

  3. Some undocumented flaw with Windows 11.

  4. Some flaw with VirtualBox that I’m not aware of, as I personally don’t use it. All my virtualization is done with Qemu/KVM and libvirtd.

  5. Windows “fast boot” feature. It just tends to cause alot of otherwise unexplainable problems.

Don’t have to use VirtualBox it’s just what I’m most familiar with. I will look into Qemu/KVM I’m sure there’s a thread on here to set it up

I’m still currently daily driving Windows 11 and I’ve figured out what was happening with DIsk2vhd.

I have Linux Mint installed on a second drive. In the Disk2vhd utility I had both the EFI partition of the Windows drive and Linux drive selected so the VHD had no idea what to do.
This now boots in Virtualbox on Windows but I’ll go with you recommendation of Qemu/KVM on Mint

I had TPM 2 and secure boot set correctly but good call that would’ve been an issue also
