What do you think? Is this a real issue, just isolated incidents or just "ESR being ESR"?

I couldn't have said it better.

Listened to 10 minutes of it. Resisting the urge to put my gun to my head.

It's not that bad, heard worse. They make good points. After all, it's not possible to make technology based on an opinion of some random person who just wants attention by any means necessary.

I guess the problem would be if you are not used to that kind of people and you feel like it would be impolite to ignore them.

As Eric Raymond said: "You judge someone by the work not by the person". If your code is awful (trying not to be vulgar here), then it's going to be rejected. Not because you're a woman, or because you're not white, because it's awful.
I don't know, social justice and social warriors in the tech feel out of place in my opinion.

liked this.

Social Justice warriors are out of place anywhere where a brain is necessary and when the nation is not in the Middle East, Africa, Eastern Europe or Asia.

Milo mi ;)

And because a lot of them are oppurtinists and assholes. "My skin color is green, I'm going to force that project mainteiner to accept my code, because it'll look good on my resume". Pfff...

Lets be fair here... alot of them are just misinformed kids who grew up in a culture where there is an overflow of opinion presented as fact and they grew up geniuenly believing that their first world problem gripes are actual problems that destroy the world... alot of them are actually decent people, but they have been, for a lack of a better word, brainwashed to commit all their energy into stupid causes

They must have been brainwashed good, because some are really really energic (if not extreme) about it.

But then are some people on forums like this not energetic and extreme about idiotic things like NIVIDIA IS BUSSTTTT or AMD AMD AMD AMD IF YOU BUY NIVIDIA YOU ARE MURDERING CHILDREN?

Its human nature to want to fight for something and to make something your life cause. it makes us feel useful, like we changed something for good...

How should you deal with these kind of people? Is ignoring them enough?

Oh yeah there are.

I do get your point. But some topics are really not worth. Are those life problems? I hope not.

Most of these stuff bring more harms than good. Take the whole women in tech dealyo Eric Raymond was talking about. Some tech people even refused to train or work with tech women because they don't want to get involved in this. Is this good? No.

The Com Sci dept was coming down on my Java instructor back in '09 because our Java class was either white guys or Asian guys (one or two Indian dudes too). No girls. I remember him saying, "How the fuck is it my fault or problem that chicks don't want to take Java? They're welcome to show up anytime they just choose not to. There's nothing in the school curriculum or policy that keeps them out." He hadn't reached that precious diversity quota. This brain rot has been infiltrating the university I work at for years now. I'm really concerned about academia professors who buy this bullshit trying to brainwash the future classes.

Yep I've seen it in my Uni too. Just one time though.
It makes me facepalm really hard.

Here in Sweden university education is free as you may know, you even get to lend money from the government with a very low interest rate to pay for your living. To the point: the government "digitalization commission" that has the mission to make sure the government reaches their "IT-political goal", put forth the proposal to let women not pay back their loan if they got an IT education.

I'm a little confused by what you mean. How are they paying back a loan if college is free (aka taxpayer paid)?

I've got a coworker (we're web devs) who is scared to death to say anything about politics online, like Twitter, because he'll be attacked into joblessness and oblivion. According to him there is a movement in the coding world to enforce certain political/social justice views, basically what this article is talking about. But is it really widespread or is it a few radical bad actors, I dunno.

This demonstrates the success of SJW social terrorism.
