Directly downloading Youtube/Vimeo 4k

So the other day I discovered that downscaled youtube 4k looks better than their normal-scaled 1080p and wouldn't suprise me if they throw in a slightly higher bitrate audio.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cx6eaVeYXOs Their download link is broken, and I'm feeling curious. Why are there no tools to directly download videos? Is it impossible to do it outsize of the browser? All of the web based ones seem to be malware ridden or have a fatal flaw (bitrate, maxmimum file size etc). All suggestions appreciated. Thanks in advance.

4k downscaled looks better than normal 1080p because of downsampling.

Now if only there were a way to to download them.

I used clipgrab at work quickly and it seemed good.

I use a free app I got off cnet I think, youtube video downloader.  Paste in the link, set the quality you want and away it goes.

Looks very much like this one, except this says it's shareware, can't find the free version I have..

You can actually use VLC for this, if you know what you're doing.

JDownloader usually works very well for this purpose. You may choose video quality and process a whole playlist with just a few clicks. You may also download subtitles if available.

1440p already looks a lot better too and ought to be good enough if you’re watching at 1080p. Getting twice the bitrate does wonders.

Yep, and i used to download videos using Atube Catcher, but i havent used the software in like a year or more, but you can try it, its free
