Desk design - Autodesk 123D

I have a need for a new desk, and frankly there is nothing to satisfy my needs.

I've began designing a desk based around the "U shape" design, but my autocad skills are lacking...

Sooo....I thought I would turn to the community for advice on the design and overall layout of the desk.

I have a space of roughly 70" x 70" that I need this desk to fit into.

(also I would like the height to be around 25"-30")

Here is what I have so far.

(I suck at 3D modeling!)

Any input on the project would be great!

With such a simple design, there's not really any need to cad it up.  Just measure your space, grab something to act as a desk surface (counter top, wood, whatever), cut it to the lengths you need, then either buy or make some 29" legs (assuming your surface is 1" thick) and attach them to the surface where needed.  Though, just a heads up, in a 70" x 70" space, you're going to have to make the depth of your desk surface fairly shallow if you want to have any room in between the two returns.

So, if I HAD to do a U shaped desk for that space, I'd make the returns 70" x 20", with a leg in each corner.  I'd then attach a 28" x 30" piece bridging the returns the returns at one end (connected with a couple braces underneath).  This will give you the U shape with (barely) enough room for you to sit in between, while giving you a decent depth (28") on the bridge for keyboard and monitor placement.  Similar to this:

Though, to be honest, if I were you, I'd just go with an L shaped desk.  You'll have much more space to move around in your chair.  I'd do a 70" x 28" piece with 5 legs, and a 42" x 28" piece with 2 legs, and connect them with a couple braces underneath, like this:

Or that's my 2 cents.  If you really want to go all out, you can actually create a full under frame for the entire thing, but honestly, as long as you aren't planning on standing on the thing, what I did above should be perfectly sturdy.

Some more information on what you plan on using your desk for would be helpful. What you want to do with it, what activities do you do at your desk, do you need to store anything, if it's for a PC how many monitors do you plan on putting on it, do you want a mouse and keyboard tray, etc.

Tell us why other desks don't work for you and what your desk needs to do and we'll have a much better chance of making something that will work for you.

How, would you go about modifying that L shaped desk to have something for your PC to sit on below (need a desk for a carpeted room) without it looking Ghetto? Turning the PSU over Isn't an option so I need a way to Intake from the bottom.

Well, you could get a computer hanger that attaches to the bottom of the desk surface.  You could also just get a short wire shelf like this:

and toss your computer on top.  Or you could replace the outside legs with 2 of these:

and use one to hold your pc (just remove the center shelf).  There's plenty of ways to keep your PC off the floor without it looking ghetto.

You could easily do a few things with that more simplified design.

1.) Put a triangular cut piece of wood connecting the 3 legs in the corner where the two sections meet. This would give you a nice little place to rest your desktop off of the ground and wouldn't look bad. You could also turn your desktop at an angle if you have a side window to show off the interior.

2.) Add a small riser behind where you'd put the monitors, basically a small shelf connected with 4 legs to the top. This would let you get it off of the floor and depending on the height of your monitors and your case it could even sit back there and not be noticed.

3.) Just turn your case on it's side. There often aren't any kinds of vents or openings where your back panel is (Behind your motherboard) so this wouldn't restrict any airflow. Also has the benefit of taking the strain off of your GPU so that you don't get card sag. You could then put your monitor on top of it, this would be where the windowed side panel might be, if you don't have any fans there.

+1 to the Triangular piece of wood. That seems like the best option since I'm not going to put my desktop on the desk (That's the ghettoness I was trying to avoid) and because I have a Define R4 windowed it would be perfect in terms of looking at Internal Components (even if I cant afford good looking stuff). Last thing I would ask is any recommendations for a specific kind of wood (going for a "Modern look" if you will, something that's elegant, classy, and minimalistic) Thanks a bunch.

That would depend on your needs and budget really the best thing you could do would be get some MDF board it is fairly easy to work with is smooth and strong. If you prime it and paint it with a higher gloss paint (for durability) it should give a nice clean almost glass like finish. I would wager a 4x8' board of MDF would run you around 40$ at a hardware store. other options would be using actual counter top formica which is particle board with a laminated surface, this comes in nearly any size and finish but will be a bit more money. I would guess depending on the lamination suitable pieces would run you between 120-200$ I know some home depots/lowes will make it as per your specs which is a nice bonus. Otherwise most larger hardware stores have pre made panel. Other then that glass or real wood would run you more money building your own custom stuff doesn't always save you money.

I have 2 of these in a U shape set up with some minor modifications you can extend the area in-between for a chair. I've found them to be absolutely awesome, Black glass and metal that's strong cheap and easy to install.
